I doubt it would be a simple release. If they can't find a taker, they would probably negotiate a buyout, usually 50% of the value of the contract.
So you want to pay Jumaine Jones $8+ mil a year?

YES. He's not going to prove ANYTHING being buried as #5 in the swing rotation behind BB, Manu, Barry, and Finley
Williams will pass up Barry just based on he can play defense, and Barry will be his same timid pussy ass self.
Barry is the only one of that group besides Manu that can really handle and pass the ball. Next.
I was reading somewhere, I think 82games.com, where Barry was part of one of the more productive 5-man units for the Spurs last year. I'll try to look it up.
If you compare the Top 10 combinations in the +/- category, (see bold +/- numbers) Barry was in the 3rd best group plus a couple of others.

why not ?
It's a rule designed to not have players traded like 8 times in one offseason. If you are traded, you can't be packaged with other players for 60 days. They can send him out by himself if they find someone that fills a need and has a salary match. That's not terribly likely.
well they just traded J.R Smith twice in 6 days!!???
Chicago sent him to Denver, alone. Did you read my post? You can do that, but it's less likely to find a need/salary match, and it's almost impossible to get into one of those multi-team megatrades.
Which goes back to my previous post! I wonder why they haven't moved him yet!!!
They obviously haven't found a player that they want with a salary that matches.
60 days almost up, anyone think the spurs have a deal in place or do you think they'll hold on to Williams for now?
when is it up?
well they gave him a jersey number,so it looks like they might keep him. on spurs.com they changed his number to 17 to 55.
17 is barry's number, they had williams with 17? Kinda funny considering they're the 2 players most likely to get traded.
I wish Barry would switch to 31.
Had alot more success with that number.
Yeah the Hawks have a ton of players, but all of them were productive last year (except Williams who looked great in Summer League). Smith is a highlight reel player w/ a developing all-around game and JJ is the face of their franchise at $15 mil a season.
The only one remotely attainable is Josh Childress, but the Hawks love him for his scrappy work ethic and scoring ability (despite the odd release). And he still only makes $2 mil a year, so there's no salary match.
Don't get me wrong, I would love to have one of them(Smith most of all), but I think the Hawks consider all of those players as key elements to their future.
Corrected
That's by design. They all got plenty of burn last year even with Harrington's playing 37 mpg, so I don't see any reason for any of them to be dumped with Al out of the picture.I still think ATL can be plucked. They have TONS of guys that fit the same bill: swingman between 6-7 and 6-9, weight between 210 and 230:
MPG last season:
Marvin Williams -- 24.7
Josh Smith -- 32.0
Josh Childress -- 30.4
Joe Johnson -- 40.7
At some point, at least one of those will be moved, either let go thru FA or traded. Every young player wants to get PAID. ATL will not pay all 4 of them. Don't forget that JJ played heavy minutes at PG last year. The drop off available minutes there, with Speedy on board and starting, will almost offset the new minutes available from Harrington's departure.
Also, don't forget that this current owner who wrested control this summer from the coup group of last year did NOT want to pay JJ. That was the point of combustibility that set off the coup last year, as a matter of fact.
By October Eric Williams will be a lock for DPOY runner-up in here.
