big lewbowski soundtrack, rockers soundtrack, the harder they come soundtrack, last action hero soundtrack has 2 excellent AIC songs. the ghost dog score by the RZA is also excellent. and, of course, anything by ennio morricone. man with a harmonica on the once upon a time in the west gives me the chills.

I really like listening to movie soundtracks, there are a lot of bad ones out there, but some really good ones also. I like them for a number of reasons. You can find songs that are unreleased and unaby some of your favorite artists on soundtracks. I've also discovered bands that I really like that I wouldn't have otherwise found if not for movie soundtracks. Plus, I've noticed that I sometimes like a soundtrack more after having seen the movie, almost like some of that charm from a movie carries over into the soundtrack and you begin to associate it with the music.

Here are my top 5 and a few other notables off the top of my head, which is subject to change. This excludes Purple Rain, A Hard Day's Night, The Wall, ect.... Because I never exactly considered those soundtracks, more like albums turned into soundtracks. Don't know if that makes any sense, but I guess they don't fit the stereotype of a soundtrack for me.

    1. Singles (Don't think this one will ever be topped, listened to this album so much during high school, great songs that you can't find anywhere else by Pearl Jam, Pumpkins, Cornell, ect... Really definitive of music during the early and mid 90's. Cameron Crowe movies have great soundtracks.)

    2. Garden State (Actually thought at one time that this might be better than Singles, but it just can't quite top it. Some really good songs by mostly bands I had never heard of before this soundtrack.)

    3. Pulp Fiction (This is one of those that I associate so strongly with parts of a movie, it really inheritted a lot of the movies charm and coolness. Probably wouldn't like this one nearly as much as I do if I hadn't seen or liked the movie so much.)

    4. Forrest Gump (Maybe the best collection of music of all of them and is 2 discs, but still isn't as much of a favorite, maybe because the songs aren't from my era. Can defenitely see how somebody would put this at the top of the list though.)

    5. Resevior Dogs (Super hip and fun soundtrack of all 70's songs that carries a lot of the movies at ude, Steven Wright as the DJ in between songs is classic.)

    Other favorites:

Vanilla Sky (Another Cameron Crowe movie, others include Elizibethtown, Fast Times at...., Almost Famous, Say Anything, and Jerry Maguire)

Natural Born Killers (wide variety between rap, rock, and old country)

The Big Chill (Great album of oldies and classic rock)

Virgin Suicides (It has a soundtrack that is good and a seperate album with the Scores, which were done by a band that I really dig called Air. The soundtrack is alright but the album with the original scores is kick ass.)

Amongst Friends (Very unknown movie and soundtrack, but has some really good music from Mick Jones, Lemonheads, Chili Pepers, Pharcyde, and BAD II. Another favorite from high school.)

What are your favorites, or what soundtracks do you think are the best?
That's a great list there. That Singles Soundtrack was great. The Hendrix track, Drown by SP, and Seasons are all worth listening to repeatedly even today.

However, much like the movie itself, the Garden State Soundtrack was way overrated.

Vanilla Sky Sountrack is worth it alone for the Paul song. That's one of his best songs IMO.

I really liked the Crow Soundtrack and Wayne's World. They were both pretty mainstream at the time, but 10 years later, I'll still listen to both every now and then. I hate the Cure, but I loved that song Burn.

Does "Woodstock:Three Days of Peace and Music" count? It is the soundtrack of an actual event, not a movie.

If it doesn't count, I guess I'd have to say the soundtrack to the movie "Best Little house in Texas" (Dolly Parton's version of "I'll Always Love You" kicks Whitney Houston's version's ass).

Top Gun-There's some generic but otherwise pretty good 80's rock, along with "You've Lost that Loving Feeling", "Take My Breath Away," and the Kenny Loggins' classic "Danger Zone." Any soundtrack with Loggins on it is gold.

Batman-I couldn't tell you a single le of any of the songs, I just remember that the music worked seamlessly with the film. Danny Elfman rocks and there's some Prince in there as well.

You guys listen to some pussy-ass music. The best soundtrack is Footloose. "Let's Hear It For the Boy" has yet to not rock a skull.

I just saw A lot Like Love and really liked the soundtrack.

Take my photo off the wall
If it just won't sing for you
'Cause all that's left has gone away
And there's nothing there for you to prove

    Oh, look what you've done
You've made a fool of everyone
Oh well, it seems likes such fun
Until you lose what you had won

Give me back my point of view
'Cause I just can't think for you
I can hardly hear you say
What should I do, well you choose

    Oh, look what you've done
You've made a fool of everyone
Oh well, it seems likes such fun
Until you lose what you had won

^That's "Look What You've Done" by Jet

One more.. "Brighter Than Sunshine" by Aqualung

    I never understood before
I never knew what love was for
My heart was broke, my head was sore
    What a feeling

    Tied up in ancient history
    I didnt believe in destiny
I look up you're standing next to me
    What a feeling

What a feeling in my soul
    Love burns brighter than sunshine
    Brighter than sunshine
Let the rain fall, i don't care
I'm yours and suddenly you're mine
    Suddenly you're mine
    and it's brighter than sunshine

    I never saw it happening
I'd given up and given in
I just couldn't take the hurt again
    What a feeling

I didn't have the strength to fight
    suddenly you seemed so right
    Me and you
    What a feeling

What a feeling in my soul
    Love burns brighter than sunshine
    It's brighter than sunshine
Let the rain fall, I don't care
I'm yours and suddenly you're mine
    Suddenly you're mine

    It's brighter than the sun
    It's brighter than the sun
It's brighter than the sun, sun, shine.

    Love will remain a mystery
But give me your hand and you will see
Your heart is keeping time with me

What a feeling in my soul
    Love burns brighter than sunshine
    It's brighter than sunshine
Let the rain fall, I don't care
I'm yours and suddenly you're mine
    Suddenly you're mine

I got a feeling in my soul ...

    Both beautiful songs.

Finally a mention of Top Gun. This soundtrack kicked some serious ass. The instrumentals in this movie are classic.

I saw LeeMajors mentioned Rockers and Harder they Come, both excellent reggae soundtracks and movies.

I'll throw in one from my younger days....................Mortal Kombat (movie soundtrack)

instrumental, all my top ones are by morricone: good, bad and the ugly, billy gets his gun, once upon a time in the west, fistful, for a few dollars more, etc. other than that i really like most of carter burwell's score work for the cohen brothers. technopop on the lebowski soundtrack is a masterpiece, and the barton fink score captured the feeling of writer's block perfectly.

Just remembered Desperado and From Dusk Till Dawn. Both very solid.
Beat me to it. Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez make excellent use of music in all of their films.

With Rodriguez, I particularly like his use of o and Tarantula in his soundtracks. They were the band that was playing at the ty Twister in Dust Til Dawn.

The Crow soundtrack was one of the first soundtracks credited with being an integral part of the movie instead of simply placing music in scenes.

Otherwise, I'm agreeing with most of the choices already presented.
