I really like listening to movie soundtracks, there are a lot of bad ones out there, but some really good ones also. I like them for a number of reasons. You can find songs that are unreleased and unaby some of your favorite artists on soundtracks. I've also discovered bands that I really like that I wouldn't have otherwise found if not for movie soundtracks. Plus, I've noticed that I sometimes like a soundtrack more after having seen the movie, almost like some of that charm from a movie carries over into the soundtrack and you begin to associate it with the music.

Here are my top 5 and a few other notables off the top of my head, which is subject to change. This excludes Purple Rain, A Hard Day's Night, The Wall, ect.... Because I never exactly considered those soundtracks, more like albums turned into soundtracks. Don't know if that makes any sense, but I guess they don't fit the stereotype of a soundtrack for me.

    1. Singles (Don't think this one will ever be topped, listened to this album so much during high school, great songs that you can't find anywhere else by Pearl Jam, Pumpkins, Cornell, ect... Really definitive of music during the early and mid 90's. Cameron Crowe movies have great soundtracks.)

    2. Garden State (Actually thought at one time that this might be better than Singles, but it just can't quite top it. Some really good songs by mostly bands I had never heard of before this soundtrack.)

    3. Pulp Fiction (This is one of those that I associate so strongly with parts of a movie, it really inheritted a lot of the movies charm and coolness. Probably wouldn't like this one nearly as much as I do if I hadn't seen or liked the movie so much.)

    4. Forrest Gump (Maybe the best collection of music of all of them and is 2 discs, but still isn't as much of a favorite, maybe because the songs aren't from my era. Can defenitely see how somebody would put this at the top of the list though.)

    5. Resevior Dogs (Super hip and fun soundtrack of all 70's songs that carries a lot of the movies at ude, Steven Wright as the DJ in between songs is classic.)

    Other favorites:

Vanilla Sky (Another Cameron Crowe movie, others include Elizibethtown, Fast Times at...., Almost Famous, Say Anything, and Jerry Maguire)

Natural Born Killers (wide variety between rap, rock, and old country)

The Big Chill (Great album of oldies and classic rock)

Virgin Suicides (It has a soundtrack that is good and a seperate album with the Scores, which were done by a band that I really dig called Air. The soundtrack is alright but the album with the original scores is kick ass.)

Amongst Friends (Very unknown movie and soundtrack, but has some really good music from Mick Jones, Lemonheads, Chili Pepers, Pharcyde, and BAD II. Another favorite from high school.)

What are your favorites, or what soundtracks do you think are the best?

I know the soundtrack for Heavy Metal 2000 had a lot of well known bands ... but I know it has a track by Insane Clown Posse ... which gives it a lot of suck points right off the bat.

I really only started listening to them like 18 months ago, but I got into them really quickly and have listened to all their albums extensively. Premiers Symptomes is my favorite, but they are all good.

Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys has a decent one ... 5 songs ... 4 instrumentals and 1 with vocals... but the 1 song is extremely beautiful.

Mafia movies tend to have good soundtracks -- A Bronx Tale, Casino and Goodfellas are all great.

    Agree on Natural Born Killers.

Tarantino uses music very well -- Pulp Fiction, Reservior Dogs and the Kill Bills are all just a great collection of very diverse tracks.

Snatch and Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels are good. Four Rooms, The Crow, The Matrix, O Brother Where Art Thou? and the first half of the Batman Forever soundtrack are also good.

That's all I can think of off the cuff. I used to listen to soundtracks like crazy, though.

a friend of mine had the wicker park soundtrack and it turned out to be pretty decent. while not my favorite, it included snow patrol, broken social scene, the stills, mazzy star, the shins, postal service and aqualung songs to make its case. i know i am neglecting alot of soundtracks, and i own plenty, but best and favorite are hard to list at the moment.

Yeah that Batman Forever Soundtrack was pretty solid, I used to listen to that a lot. There is a kick ass Flaming Lipps' song and a good Micheal Hutchin's song on there.

I forgot about O Brother Where Art Thou? That is a really great soundtrack, I'm a huge Alison Krauss fan, so it really opened me up to the other great blue grass tunes on there.

And I also forgot about Guy Ritchie's soundtracks, I've neve owned them but enjoyed the music on them when I watched the movies. Really hip soundtracks.

That Postal Service cover of Phil Collins' Against All Odds is so cool. I've been searching for that on irc to download, but I haven't had any luck finding it. I believe that Shins song is unreleased too, they are a great band. If you like the Shins, check out a song by them on The Spongebob Squarepants Soundtrack, it's called They'll Soon Discover, it might be my favorite song by the Shins. Actually that Spongebob soundtrack isn't bad, Wilco and Ween have songs on there too.

I was gonna go with the fact that both "Snatch" and " in in the Bushes" were in there ... but to each his/her own.

Now you've reminded me of a soundtrack I've been meaning to buy for years but never got around to. Same with The Royal Tenenbaums.

I left a big one off the list that might even squeeze in at the 4 or 5 spot, I Am Sam. Nothing but Beatles covers, and really solid ones at that. Can't believe that I left that one off my list.

That Royal Tenenbaums soundtrack is good, there is a song on there by Elliot Smith, I dig his music. There are some strange covers by Niko, one is a Jackson Browne song. Solid soundtrack.

Cold Mountain Soundtrack is great, Jack White is unbelievable on that album. Has anybody ever seen the mini-concert on the Bonus Featurs of the Special Edition of Cold Mountain? Jack White, Alison Krauss, and some other blue grass and mountain music artists I've never heard, very cool.
