The Backroom was my favorite bar in Austin to catch Spurs games at. I watched most of the 2005 Playoffs and Finals there. The bar had a very "San Antonio" feel to it and the crowd was great too. Unfortunately it closed recently.

I'm not a Spurs fan BUT if you want to see any NBA game on any night then go over to The Tavern on N. Lamar and 12th or somewhere right around there. It's not really north, more like central Austin. They have NBA league pass, Directv and flat screens everywhere. I have the same at home but every once in awhile I go there to watch a game and I've never had a problem getting to see the game I want...plus, you can sit a couple of feet away from a 42" flat screen while you eat and drink and cheer on your team!

it's going to suck...not having the hometown fans everywhere you go, not seeing the go spurs go banners everywhere, not having local media coverage. it sucks. it sucks even worse here in austin because there are tons of people from all around texas who love the rockets and mavs.

words of advice: rockets fans are cool until you start talking about '95. mavs fans are never cool under any cir stances, no matter what. find some friends from san antonio and stick with them exclusively from october to june.

*hometown fans* in austin = spurs fans for probably 80% of the nba watching austin population....there are more mavs fans the closer you get to the u.t. area and of course there are some old-schoolers who still think the rockets are the only team in texas who have won a championship but for the most part, austin is pretty much a spurs colony

Yeah, outside of the university, spurs colony is a good way to describe austin

that's true outside ut...its just that most of the ers in my area of town (north campus) ARE students, so all the bars within walking/biking distance are either packed to the gills with stupid undergrads or full or asshole mavs fans or both. i've been to the tavern to watch baseball and have enjoyed it, so i'll probably go there for the spurs...they also have hold 'em tournies there that are fun too

Plus, you go to enough of these places to watch Spurs games, and you meet cool people who also watch the games in their houses. So if you can't find a bar or restaurant that's showing the game, there's your other option. And actually, you can make friends with die-hard fans by wearing a Spurs shirt every once in a while. Other die-hard fans (who live outside of SA) are bound to comment.

Pluckers is a little on the pricey side, but I always get good service and the grub is top notch - and I don't mind paying a little more since we're there for at least 3/4 of a game. We always tip big when we take a table out of commission for that long. I stay away from the one next to campus though when school is in session.

Rinos & Jocks is pretty decent. BW3 on sixth can be fun (if it's still open - didn't go there last season but had a of a time watching the Lakers get thumped by the Pistons there).

Agree on the Mavs fans. Generally, they're bandwagoners, they don't understand the game, and they don't even know the history of their own team. They talk big but get soooo pissed off when you give it back to them. At times I've found almost equal numbers of Spurs/Mavs fans in a restaurant, but have never been outnumbered. And for some reason they all seem to look like they belong to the same frat.

yeah i dont want to too much about mavs fans, cause in general i like them okay, but the college aged mavs fans lick sweaty donkey chode and your right dont know about the game.

i watched games 2, 3, and 4 of the spurs mavs series at Austin's Pizza on the drag and it was about half an dhalf. the bar is nice, the pizza is good, but it was a miserable experience. unfortunately, i had to watch game 7 in a bar in dallas texas filled to the brim with about 150 screaming mavs fans. my dad and i were the only spurs fans. when manu made that three near the end of regulation, we were screaming so hard and the entire place was dead quiet except for us. imagine how awful it was to make the walk of shame past all those mavs fans on the way out the bar. worse than .4

    This is so weird....

I am now a freshman at St. Edward's University, which is right on South Congress and is probably very close to some good sports bars. .
Well you are close to a bar but it's not really considered a sports bar...but they do show sports there, just be ready for a cover charge. There's also plenty of crack and hookers right there as well.
