Anyone who thinks Duncan is at an MVP level is blind, a homer, or both. He's been nothing near MVP level this year. Missed FTs late in the game, whining like crazy, outside shot looking like garbage, etc. To be honest he looks a lot like he did last year...very slow and lethargic at times. If it weren't for the heroics of the bench last night along with Elson's inspired play this thread wouldn't even exist right now.
I'm sorry, since you seem to be such an avid Spurs fan, I'm sure you've seen every game right? <<sarcasm>> You probably based your assessment on Sportscenter highlights. What those highlights didn't show is that Duncan has 4 double-doubles in 7 games and made 6 of 9 on FT that night you are referring to. No his bank shot may not be going in, but he still makes great plays in the post and draws fouls. His numbers thus far this year are on par with previous seasons (before last year) and if you were a fan you'd know he always looks lacksadasical....that's why no one ever realizes he's there and the next thing you know he's dropped 20 and grabbed 15 rebounds. Try basing your opinion somewhat on fact next time.

Without Duncan, I'd see the Spurs achieving a 44-38 season (most of the losses being close)

I don't think it's sad that Tim won't possibly win another MVP.
    1. He doesn't need to because he has two back-to-backs already
    2. He doesn't mind sharing the limelight with two other great players
    3. Just being considered among the top 5 is complimentary enough, given that he doesn't have to shoulder the load anymore.
I like Tim because he doesn't care about personal awards as much as the others, sure any person would like to get recognized but he doesn't complain about this stuff (like not making first team-All NBA last year), which makes him classy.. All that those personal accolades are incidental awards that happened along when he was trying to get a win for the team. Which reflects a lot on the players' mentalities on this team. It's refreshing and that humility will set him above his contemporaries in the long run.

Timmy's been playing with a purpose this season, that being to get his team back to the finals were they belong.I think he plays 30+ every game if he's healthy.I know if he stays playing like this he gets my vote.Hopefully we hold that trophy in our hands next year screaming to Timmy MVP,MVP,MVP...

Wow, we actually agree for once! (Or you read the second post in this thread)
absolutely no way timmy gets another MVP. Why? The league (David Stern) doesn't want to see his boring ass get another trophy. He doesn't generate the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

    $$$$$$$$$$$$

    $$

...that D Wade, LeBron, Shaq, Melo or even Nash do. Any of these guys winning trophies benefits the league more monetarily (incl Dirk) and youll see another birage of bs calls next May that verify this conspiracy theory.

Tim Duncan may be the only player in the NBA that if you put him on almost any team they will be in the playoffs, but his fundamentally sound domination will go unnoticed because he has Manu and Tony. That, and King James will win it soley because he is the NBA's new icon.

Chris Paul has a better chance of winning it than Tim.

All that matters is the NBA Finals MVP, and I'd say Timmy has a damn good chance of winning that.

    Tim won't win because:

    1. fundamentals don't beat pizzazz in the voters minds.
    2. He has too many good players playing with him and that spread the wealth (stats)
    3. He has too many good players on the team that make his contributions not as visibly or plausibly valuable as if he was carrying the team.
    4. The voters are looking for a new generation player to give it to.

He could still be the finals MVP if we get that far.

I'm not being biased about Duncan when I say this (Mavs fan here), but I don't think he's going to win an MVP again. He's playing well but he's not even at the level that he played in the semis against the Mavericks where he averaged 32 ppg, 12 boards and nearly 3 blocks per game. The Spurs are going to have a great record but I also see the Cavs doing well and I could see Lebron getting the MVP if they don't implode for whatever reason. Although, there aren't lots of guys who will vie for MVP this year and because I don't think Nash with his back problems or Wade without his Shaq will get their teams to impressive winning records in the regular season, I could actually see Duncan at least vying for MVP with Lebron, Dirk, and, and, and...?

Ok, so after changing my initial analysis (I know, I know, I had to think it through while I typed) I'd say he's 50-50 to win another MVP but it's certainly a possibility.

duncan doesn't need to put up gaudy stats and get an MVP for the spurs to succeed. he can still take over a game or series if needed, but we are better off in the long run trying to get everyone involved.

Unless the Spurs win 3-4+ more games than any other team or Duncan starts averaging about 28-13-3...he won't win the MVP on this team.

The MVP almost always goes to the best player on a top 4 division winner or top 4 team with the fewest All Star Teamates...or if it does go to a player on an extremely talented team....that team usually has to have far and away the best record in the league and his numbers must be standout even on that team.

Steve Nash is the exception to this rule but he is a unique case...his team was elite and without far and away the best record in the league, and he did have a ton of All Star teamates...however his position defining numbers were so superior offensively to any other PG in the league, and contributed so much directly to the offensive production of his teamates, that he had a unique case...both times he won it.

The award hardly ever goes to a guy on a team that isn't a division winner/elite....no matter how sick his numbers...ask Garnett.

With Parker and Manu on this team it's going to take about 67-68 wins for Duncan to win it...

LeBRon has a good chance of winning it this year...if his team doesn't go into a prolonged slump...

There are very few bigman MVP candidates this season IMO...I guess Boozer.

I think the strongest contenders this year so far are Baron Davis, Kobe, Chris Paul, Dwight Howard, LeBron, and Boozer. Maybe Elton Brand...but he needs to up his numbers some.

Duncan is playing better than anybody else is playing in the NBA.

People always forget that basketball is not just about what you do on offense.

When you remember that, it is easy to see that Duncan is playing better than anybody else and deserves the mvp.

The season is still very young, but the early returns on Duncan are very good. He's lively and more active than he normally is at this time of the year.

He's having a MONSTER first half against the Queens. Don't want to see him leading the break, though.

Here's hoping for good health throughout the regular season, through the playoffs and the Finals.
