I dont know what qualifies as an altercation in the NBA but the only stoppage in play was to mop up the sweat where Elson landed.

That's what their defense is, Duncan was on the floor when the dunk happened. No elbows/punches were thrown.

Was Richardson's foul not a Flagrant 2, then? I've heard people use that one by comparison, so I assumed it was.

I am not sure which foul you are refering to.

If he was ejected from the game it probably was. Of course if he already had a technical foul then a flagrant 1 would get him tossed as well.

The closest thing I can remember to this foul was Posey body checking Heinrich last year. That was an F2 and Posey was suspended.

    Flagrant 2 carries a 1 game suspension.

The only way Horry isn't suspended is if the league downgrades the call to a flagrant 1.
    LMAO you're full of .

Flagrant 2 comes with immediate ejection. nothing more.

Heat's Posey suspended for one game
    Posted 4/28/2006 7:43 PM ET

NEW YORK (AP) — Miami forward James Posey was suspended for one game without pay by the NBA on Friday for knocking down Chicago's Kirk Hinrich on a break Thursday night in the Heat's 109-90 playoff loss to the Bulls.

Posey, called for a flagrant foul two and ejected with 3:15 left in the game, will miss Game 4 of the Eastern Conference series Sunday.

Miami leads the best-of-seven series 2-1.

What I meant was that if you get Flagrant 2, it does not mean you automatically get 1 game suspension.

It is up to the league to decide if the foul was hard enough to merit 1 game suspension.

in other words, flagrant 2 does not necessarily mean you get 1 game suspension

Horry SHOULD get suspended, but not for the flagrant foul. But for the elbow to Bell's head.

and if Bell tried to punch him(I did not see this part) , then Bell must be suspended as well.

    this is a mess

I stand corrected. I thought you meant that there was nothing more that could be done after the F2 was assessed and was posting an example of where the NBA stepped in further.

But if you want to call me an idiot without seeking further info, go yourself.

From the official NBA Rule Book:

    RULE NO. 12—FOULS AND PENALTIES

    A. Technical Foul

    Section V - Conduct

    * * * *

    l. A player, coach or trainer must be ejected for:
    (1) A punching foul
    (2) A fighting foul
    (3) An elbow foul which makes contact above shoulder level
    (4) Technical foul for an attempted punch which does not make contact
    (5) Deliberately entering the stands other than as a continuance of play
    (6) Flagrant foul penalty (2)
    (7) Second flagrant foul penalty (1)
    (8) Participation in the game when not on team’s active list

    Section VII—Fines

    a. Recipients of technical fouls for unsportsmanlike conduct will be assessed a $500 fine for the first offense, and an additional $500 for the second offense in any one given game, for a minimum total of $1,000. If a player is ejected on (1) the first technical foul for unsportsmanlike conduct, (2) a punching foul, (3) a fighting foul, (4) an elbow foul, or (5) a flagrant foul, he shall be fined a minimum of $1,000.

    b. Whether or not said player(s) is ejected, a fine not exceeding $50,000 and/or suspension may be imposed upon such player(s) by the Commissioner at his sole discretion.

    c. During an altercation, all players not participating in the game must remain in the immediate vicinity of their bench. Violators will be suspended, without pay, for a minimum of one game and fined up to $50,000.

The suspensions will commence prior to the start of their next game.

    B. Personal Foul
    Section IV—Flagrant Foul

    b. If contact committed against a player, with or without the ball, is interpreted to be
unnecessary and excessive, a flagrant foul—penalty (2) will be assessed. A personal foul is charged to the offender and a team foul is charged to the team.

PENALTY: (1) Two free throws shall be attempted and the ball awarded to the offended team on either side of the court at the free throw line extended. (2) If the offended player is injured and unable to attempt his free throws, his coach will select a subs ute and any player from the team is eligible to attempt the free throws. (3) This subs ute may not be replaced until the ball is legally touched by a player on the court. EXCEPTION: Rule 3—Section V—e. (4) The injured player may return to the game at any time after the free throws are attempted. (5) This is an unsportsmanlike act and the offender is ejected.

    c. A flagrant foul may be assessed whether the ball is dead or alive.

    _____________________________

I think the rules here are rather simple.

    1. Level 2 flagrant fouls bring ejections and may bring suspensions and larger fines, at the Commissioner's discretion. But there is no rule compelling a suspension following the issuance of a level 2 flagrant.

    2. The rule concerning players leaving the bench area applies, by its express terms, only to instances in which there is an altercation. The rules don't define what qualifies as an "altercation," meaning that it's subject entirely to common sense definitions of the term. But the rule is explicit that IF there is an altercation and a player leaves the vicinity of the bench, he's suspended for at least one game, starting with his team's next game, and fined at least $50,000. The rule itself suggests to me, though, that there's lots of wiggle room -- specifically to define what is or is not an altercation and what is or is not the vicinity of the bench.

That's not true -- Stoudemire and Diaw have a 1 game suspension plus a fine coming to them only if they are determined to have left the vicinity of the bench during an altercation. The Commissioner (and Stu Jackson) get the final word about whether the rule was broken -- I could see that they might conclude that it was not; I could also see that they might conclude that it was.

The question, though, is whether the rule was actually broken; it's hard to tell given the vagueness of the terms used to define the rule.

If leaving the coaches box and having to be restrained by assistant coaches isn't deemed outside the vicinity of the bench, then the NBA is nothing but a pack of lying s bags. The coaches box is there to determine the lateral vicinity of the bench, that's why coaches must stay in it during game play. If stepping out of the box would still be considered in the vicinity of the bench, then the damn box wouldn't be needed in the first place. They only way they aren't suspended is if the league wants to lie and cover it up Roswell style.

Although that would be a stupid move, given the amount of evidence. That would be akin to aliens coming to earth at Roswell, meeting with the mayor and getting keys to the city, holding a press conference on national tv, and then the army claims it's a weather balloon.
