Didn't know about Kareen.
Bill Russell is someone I have always admired. He played long before I was born, but when I see him talking on tv, I have a lot of respect for him.
Former player, I'd take Len Elmore.
Current player, in addition to Vaughn and Battier, I'd take Doleac.
Jaren Jackson was the valedictorian of his high school.

i didnt have time to make my second team this morning but here it is
PG-Darell Armstrong
SG-Ray Allen
SF-Brent Barry
PF-Tim Duncan
C-Mark Madsen
I would throw Grant Hill at Small Forward.
No mentions of Dwight Howard? This guy is legitimately smart and drew DRob comparisons on that basis.
I guess that's what you get for being in Orlando -- no one notices you, and if they do, they don't care.
On a more relevant note: Malik Rose
Actually, there was a trivia question in the early 90s: Name the three NBA All-Star centers who scored over 1200 on their SATs.
The answers were Kareem, DRob, and Shaq.
Yah Shaq isn't a dumb guy...
it was BIGGER. before the watered down scores in more recent years.
TD and DRob. Pretty much any player who was in college for the full 4 years like Ryan Gomes...
And I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that Shaq got a 700 on his SATs and Kobe a 900. (old scale to be fair..)
The players whose minds impress me the most have to be Bill Russell, Kareem, and Bill Bradley.
Among active players I would add Emeka Okafor, who was a pretty strong student while at UConn (graduated with a degree in finance and a 3.8 GPA).
Out of the retired players I would add Kevin Johnson, if only for the fact that I remember an NBA announcer commenting how KJ likes to read the novels of Thomas Hardy when he wants to relax.
You sure he didn't say "when he wants to sleep"?![]()
