*faints*
Out of the young coaches...AJ's the best one.
JVG would be one of the last coaches I would pick. I would pick P.J. Carlesimo as the coach.
Pop sucks. I hope he gets fired.
Cant wait til hes gone, maybe the Spurs will actually win some without him.
If Pop ever got fired, Tim would hang it up IMMEDIATELY. Those two pretty much come as a set.
Eh...he is the best one out of the young ones.
I've never ripped AJ's coaching ability...
It's his playing ability I had a problem with.
I'd hate Pop as a PG too...
if pop retires would you want them to trade tp and completely start over
or is tp going be be a legitamate star and hopefully will be able to bring in a big to play with him
QUESTION
When TP farts does the gas exit from ducks' ears?
QUESTION
When Pop retires
there will be people that say
"Finally, now we can get a real coach"
No joke.
All this talk of TD and Pop retiring is making me itchy. Can we not discuss it?
I think we're likely to have 3 more years of Spurs summer, more if Tim extends. You shouldn't be breaking out the itch cream just yet. Put it this way: if you go three years in the other direction, SA had two trophies, had just lost a heartbreaker seriesto the Fakers, and no longer had David and had never won without him. Lots of good stuff can happen in the next three years, as it has in the preceding three.
That is a nice way to think of it.![]()
ducks got pwnzeed3d
Who do I want as the next coach?
Mike Brown
PJ
AJ
Anybody that had familiarity with Pop and the Pop era Spurs. Also, big name coaches wouldn't hurt, but what big name coach would come to a team that would be lottery bound for several year?
AJ, easily. AJ was born to coach. He got owned by Nellie but Nellie has owned a lot of coaches with his gimmicks. The thing with Nellie is that his gimmicks come back to bite him once teams see what he's doing. Nellie owned Larry Brown + Pop back in the day, so there isn't much shame to it.
In Dallas vs. Spurs v2006, AJ coached as well as any coach has against the Spurs. Up there with Phil Jackson ... but Jackson had much better players.
Ideally, AJ gets let go before Pop retires and becomes Pop's lead assistant until this era of Spurs is over and then AJ takes the reins. Of the other young coaches, the only one who really stresses defense and execution enough to become championship level is Nate McMillan. Even though the Blazers sucked last year, I was impressed with how they played.
Of the older coaches, I wouldn't mind Phil Jackson, Jerry Sloan or Rick Adelman. Larry Brown and Pat Riley are pretty good coaches but they have an extremely short shelf life. Players tune out those two coaches in less than two years.
That said, hopefully Pop has another decade left in him. After all, he's 16 years younger than Hubie Brown.

Yeah, but Pop has a drinkin problem. He's a full blown wino. That's got to take 16 yrs. off your coaching life itself![]()

The one thing I question about AJ...will his players tune him out?
I see the potential for that to be a problem and I think that's really the major question about his coaching...
AJ got tuned out here...
Personally, I like Eric Musselman and Nate Mcmillan.
Seems like only me & Timvp are endorsing Phil Jackson.

Sam Mitc ??
We're talking about 2012-13 (making TD 36-7) before TD/Pop retire, surely?
People must be very bored. :|
I like the Nate McMillan pick.
Taking Seattle to where he did was also very impressive, that team (based on talent) had no right playing against us in the second round of 05 and they still played physical old school ball.
Not to mention Portland is coming full circle, even before Oden.
Oh, and the Horry suggestion cause well he bball iq is stupidly good and he's expressed interest in a coaching position once his playing days are up.
I wouldn't bank on anything past the next three years. Tim seems to be shying away from the extension where he can basically name the price. The Spurs always say they never negotiate with him. They just ask how many years, and then fill in the maximum salary under the CBA.
I think Tim could play another effective 3-4 years past this contract, but playing until you drop and banking as much coin as you can have never struck me as Tim Duncan qualities. He also holds his cards pretty close to the vest, so you have to watch his actions because he doesn't announce anything.
What I'm hoping is that he's waiting to opt out next summer and sign a full boat 6 yr deal, but I'll admit to having no idea if that's his actual motivation. I don't think it's going out on a limb to say that if he doesn't opt out, he's probably playing until 2010 and that's it. Similarly, if he signs something new, that contract will be it.
I think a lot of it rides on his health. He had a good healthy season for the first time in 3 years, and he may be waiting to see how next year goes.
