Duncan and Shaq would never be able to play together, except against LA, so I agree that that would be the reason the Spurs could consider him..they probably won't, because he would be like the 6th big man, which would probably turn him off, and he's a bad fit overall, but he would be a good option against the Gasol/Bynum frontcourt IMO..if anybody saw them play this year, it was pretty clear that both Bynum and Gasol are intimidated by Shaq, especially Gasol..
I'd sure prefer Gasol or Bynum against Shaq than the options (other than Duncan) that the Spurs have. Instead of being intimidated, Gasol would probably laugh at rookie Splitter, ancient Dice, "limo" Bonner and 2nd year Blair while telling Blair to keep working on his left hand.

Shaq will go to Boston for the vet. min before SA for the LLE or what's left of the MLE.

Shaq is a big that just clogs the lane and alters shots. If the Spurs run their defenses like the Rockets, they funnel opposing players towards their bigs which forces up an errant off balance shot, blocked shot or turnover from collapsing defenses. That's what Shaq would bring to the table.

so you give up on achampionship in the next two years?
No, not at all. I give up on Tim ever being what he once was. If this team is to win a Championship in the next 2 years, it will be because different players step up and cover the difference that Tim used to make.

We need to attack differently on offense. Tim is too slow and doesn't command double teams like he used to. He can be guarded 1 on 1 for long stretches.

Several NBA Teams Interested In Shaq As A Person07.31.10
NEW YORK—Officials from the Hawks, Celtics, and Heat expressed interest in Shaquille O'Neal as a person Wednesday, confirming league rumors that they believed the free agent center would be highly suitable for a long-term friendship. "We have made contact with Shaq's camp and have told his people that we would love for him to meet with us, and just hang out and stuff," said Atlanta Hawks president Bob Williams, adding that he was impressed with O'Neal's passion and the sense of humor he displayed in Cleveland. "Our scouts feel that even after all these years, Shaq can still contribute in small ways, especially at parties and informal get-togethers. Say what you want about him, but he's the kind of guy you want to call up and watch a basketball game with." O'Neill told reporters he's ready to make a commitment to friendship for $8 million per year.

except teams wouldn't attack the rim. they'd just run the pick'n'roll and get wide open 12 footers all night long.

Why would you expect just because your perimeter players play help defense on the penetrating guards funnelling them into the big that you don't play pick and roll defense?

With Gasol and Bynum in L.a., you need size and muscle. Shaq wouldn't be replacing Duncan, he'd be teaming up with Duncan. Bonner and Dice don't give you much on the defensive end, and blair is gritty, but undersized and not yet a defensive presence. Splitter wasn't a great defender in Euroball, I doubt he'll be a major factor defensively here, but who knows. Bottom line, I would take Shaq at the LLE but I wouldn't pay him his asking price of 8 million.
Wrong. You do need length, no question, but you also need mobility. I don't know why people make the Lakers front line out to be physically imposing; it's not. The Spurs have more "muscle" on the front line than the Lakers do.

Yeah, you're right. The only people who know how to run a pick and roll in the NBA are starting.

Seriously, WTF kind of stupid logic is that?
ok let me speak re to you "DA 2nd unit well beee easyer tuu deefend yyaaaayy!!!" of course subs know how to pick and roll however since shaq isnt a rookie/or have no experience in these situations i think be fine out there against the likes of Benga/amundson/turiaf/nesterovich/kwame brown do you get what im saying now???? and if you look up his PER its still as or more productive than alot of starters in the league so lets not act like this guy has nothing to offer

Shaqs bad is more harmful that Shaqs good is helpful, therefor i say kill Shaq and let the many tribes feast on him. seriously tho Shaq, all he ever did was hate on Dave and Tim, so Shaq aka whack can go and slurp on Wade's nuts like Lebron cause I don't wanna see that goblin play pick and roll D in a Spurs jersey. Shack can go to and take that TWISM bull with him.

So much for Europe. RT @SherrodbCSN #Celtics appear to be close to signing Shaquille O'Neal. Will have the story up shortly.

Celtics, with Shaq, will be full of vets...when Perkins come back, where are the minutes for everybody ?
Maybe the point is that they're really scared 'cause of Perkins Injury (supposedly a bad one)...
On our side, I'm sorry that Shaq is not going to sign with us, looked like an ideal fit against championship caliber teams...and I still think we need another big body that can play, 'cause of our vet's age, and available for the minimum or LLE.

Rasho and Shaq (that were my best options) are gone.

The best still available ? maybe, strictly for defensive purposes, someone like Kwame Brown ? or someone that already knows the system ? (Like Mohammed or Elson?)

it would be sick...even though shaq would be a liability vs mobile centers, thinking about him and Duncan tossing each other ally-oop passes every possession at will would be cool to see...who'd be able to prevent that from happening really? ah well better off without him.

I know I dont post much, but I've been around awhile...so I'll say this, although it may not be popular, I mostly agree with Leonard. I think it is a mistake not to go after Shaq. I think it would be better to have the guy than not. So the guy doesnt have the best history with the Spurs, even ol' T.O danced on the Dallas Cowboy's star once.

If the guy will help you win a couple of games, and you can keep him away from teams like Boston, or Miami, why wouldnt you do it?

I know people don't care about the Barnes signing with the Lakers, etc. but I just get this feeling that we are going to regret not making these moves and letting these teams "ahead of us" get stronger, if even minutely.

Guys I just dont want to be tied with a team like Boston, in an awesome overtime game with two seconds to go... and Shaq's in there....hasn't done anything all game..but he manages to take that pass..somehow get past Duncan and Splitter, and slam down that winning goal... ...AND we lose yet another close game.

    It's just frustrating sometimes..

I think that same ! No Shaq is not the answer to our problems, but he dam sure can help Timmy! I've only missed 6 Spurs games in the last 3yrs & in that time I've never seen more than 1 Spur really tryin to rebound! Shaq put/will put up the stats that matter(not counting shots he will alter). Now I'm not dissin the new R&B/Rapper sensation Dejuan Blair but he & Bonner aint against the Lakers(see KG & Sheed). So what in the made the Spurs FO think we didn't need a insurance big?

    ...and another thing.
last year holt said he was committed to pay the lux tax 'till Timmy window was open.
And last year, in fact, thanks to Jefferson contract, Spurs paid a lot of money.
But now, thanks to the RJ re-negotiation, we are still under the lux tax...and, as we sow, players that can give a kmore than decent contribution to a winning team (see barnes and Shaq) has been signed for vet-min or something just more than that....

So I wonder... paying something like 3/4 millions (I suppose two contracts at LLE or vet min) or also something like 6/7 millions (if were necessary to make a sign and trade for take one player we wanted) like lux tax is an excessive price for a better chance at a le ?

And please, also for Shaq and barnes haters one thing must be at last clear...for the limited amounto of money they'll receive for the contracts they signed, they are, as of now, in all possible way, real bargains.

Because Shaq does that all the time now...

Yeah, it's possible that could happen - it's also possible that we could be up 2 on Boston and Kendrick Perkins hits a 3 as time expires.

Make decisions based on what's best for the team, not on hypothetical (and unlikely) scenarios that you don't want to see.

Any minutes that Shaq gets would be minutes that another big wouldn't - and Duncan, Blair, and even McDyess are all better rebounders than Shaq at this stage in their careers. And Splitter may well prove to be.

Like Will_Spurs mentioned, why are people still talking about getting him?
