Punishment for Spurs fans will be that the Spurs will have to play a home game in an empty stadium.
That home game will be in Sacramento.

You realize I wasn't being serious, right?
By the way, great subtle quote from Woj on the Heat audience: "Mostly, they come to watch LeBron and D-Wade, or they don't come at all."

Nope. I originally thought so as well, but apparently there's no relevance of "ex post facto" in contract law.
Honestly, the NHL has far less national appeal to work with. NBA superstars transcend the national landscape, Stern had WAY more than his fair share of them post-Jordan, and has repeatedly shown that he has no idea to market a player/team that won't go out of their way to market themselves. The NHL has to do a LOT more work to make people tune-in in the first place. The NFL has got it figured out. Baseball learned from it's big strike. Stern is just making repeatedly inane decisions that torpedo the sports reputation because his ego won't ever let him admit to making an error. That isn't to say that Bettman is good, but he's got a sport that has been on the decline. The NBA is succeeding in SPITE of what Stern does and he still manages to nearly sabotage it at every turn.
Not all who write on nba.com (or who work with TNT) is taking the company line.
David Aldridge over a few tweets has defended Pop as well - https://twitter.com/daldridgetnt
This one from the old angry writer, Charley Rosen - http://www.sheridanhoops.com/2012/11...the-dunce-cap/ , who too takes Pop's side.
Indeed, Stern has no business deciding who a coach chooses to play and not play. And what does Stern do now?
Follow through and fine Pop and/or the Spurs organization?
Suspend Popovich?
However, no matter how substantial the expected sanctions might be, there’s no way that Stern will intimidate Pop and prevent the best coach in the league from reprising this same move when he feels it will be in the best interest of his ball club.
And what if San Antonio had won the game?
Perhaps Stern would have applied his substantial sanctions to the Heat.

Rosen is the last person to ever side with the Spurs
Bad day at the office, eh Stern?
For those that don't know, Rosen was an assistant coach under Phil Jackson in minor league basketball in the 80s. His writing has been less than favorable to the Spurs over the years.
Chris Mannix @ChrisMannixSI Fast forward to June...Spurs win the le...Pop, with Stern next to him, asked the key to the season. "That rest we got November 29th."
Chris Mannix @ChrisMannixSI
Wow. Stan Van Gundy with some stinging words for David Stern in a taped interview. Catch the interview on @NBCSportsTalk at 6 ET
Damn, Wojo just called Stern a flat out crook.
Just basically called him a midget creeping around like a dentist with ether
Called it like it is
Hmm I think i missed that part of the article, Goebbels.
I guess you don't watch Boardwalk Empire
You are correct.
It's getting late in the day. You gotta think Stern has to do something within the next hour or two.
Stern has gone off the deep end.
@daldridgetnt: Breaking - NBA has suspended Popovich 5 games in addition to a 1 million dollar team fine. The players that missed the game were also suspended 2 games per league sources
j/k
You'd be a lot cooler if you did
For real this time - no discipline being taken
@RedsArmy_John: Wait... so now the NBA is NOT disciplining the Spurs? http://t.co/472HLcDO (via @sa2ny2004 )
NBA will force Spurs to play only those players with Da, Le or De in their names. Thankfully Spurs will be able to have 2 players on the court for the next game, Blair and Nando.
There will be no sanctions at all. Very surprised that Stern actually bit the bullet on this one but now I'm more concerned that something awful will happen.
