i think that shaq is lying again. how many games did he watch robinson play while he (shaq) was in high school? he left high school before robinson started playing for the spurs (same basis for showing his "autograph story" was a lie too).

    LSU Bio

and it's not like there were tons of navy basketball games on TV, march madness wasn't nearly as big or televised, even olympic games got very little television time in the 80's. when did he see drob in order to pattern his game?

Robinson's prime was wasted by horrible front-office moves and bad luck with injures. Strike 1 was refusing to pay Strickland in '92. Strike 2 was signing Vinny Del Negro to be the point guard. Strike 3 was ever trading for Rodman, who was great in the regular season but then decided he'd concentrate on his feud with the coach instead of how to beat the Rockets. Strike 4 was hiring that ass Bob Hill, who alienated everyone on the team (most of all Rodman). Strike 5 was trading for Charles Smith, who must have played all of 20-30 games in the 4 years he was on the cap, to replace Rodman after the team's '95 flame-out. Mix in mings, the team's clear #2 guy, blowing out his knee in '92 and Robinson's being injured and unable to play in the '92 playoffs and the '96-'97 season, and he only had three decent shots at a le:

    1) 89-90: his rookie year. Spurs lost in game 7 on the road in Portland in OT thanks to a monster steal from behind by Clyde Drexler when Wingate was about to complete a wide-open layup for the game-winner at the buzzer. That miracle play was the only thing keeping the Spurs out of the Finals that year against Detroit (who they probably would not have beaten though).
    2) 90-91: Can't blame David for that one. He averaged 25.75 ppg, 13.5 reb, 3.75 blk on 69% shooting in the series loss to GS while getting swarmed relentlessly.
    3) 94-95: Outplayed by Olajuwon. Hats off to Hakeem and the Rockets.

I've never seen one guy take so much for one series.
    Great post, baseline.

But what about the year the Spurs got beat by the Suns when Barkley pulled up and hit that shot over Robinson?

And what about the year when Strickland did that ridiculous no-look pass over his head that screwed us?

I thought the Spurs could've won those years.

F Shaq. He did nothing but dump on, lie about, and ridicule DRob during his career. Shove it up your ass, fatty.
That lie about him getting turned down for an autograph is gonna stick with me forever. Regardless of anything Shaq does, he'll always be a bag for that.
F Shaq. His efforts to make nice can't erase the unfair public criticism and outright jealously of D-Rob, throughout his playing career. He's a 100% douch to me.
You 'Helen Keller' muh-fuggers that say that Shaq has been at all classy (save this one Robinson proper) at any point in his career (in particular when D-Rob was still banging this league) need to get your eyes, ears and brains checked. I try not to call out people like this but to state that Shaq embodies any sort of class (outside of personal worth) is abso-f*cking-lutely re-f*cking-diculous.
Shaq can glo blow himself. And he probably does.
Thank all of you knowledgebale, experienced fans that remember history. For the rest of you, if you want to be blind, go walk with the shepherd.

SHAQ. All he did was CONSTANTLY ridicule and disrespect one of the classient players to ever play the game. Did Shaq ever invest millions of his own money in an inner city school?

Lest we not forget, piece of Shaq got the benefit of officals never calling fouls on him for turning his shoulder and running over guys.

I hope David ignores him and does not accept Shaq's FAKE olive branch.

Shaq seems to want to re-write history a lot. I would like to see more media type folks call him on it but doubt that would ever happen.

But I can call him on it. <g>

Okay, David Robinson got the League MVP award in 1995. The voting went like this:
    1. D-Rob with 901 points
    2. Shaq with 605 points
    3. Karl Malone with 532 points
    4. Patrick Ewing with 230 points
    5. Hakeem with 147 points

Shaq quote from Sports Illustrated dated June 12, 1995

"Olajuwon is the league's only elite center for whom O'Neal's feelings go beyond respect, to admiration. None of the sarcasm or disdain that sometimes creeps into Shaq's comments about other big men is present when he talks about Olajuwon. "He's a great player, the best. In my mind he was the MVP this year," says O'Neal, who finished second to San Antonio Spur center David Robinson in the voting while Olajuwon was fifth. "I don't want to be compared to anybody but Hakeem."

    Great points, BB.

Those first two strikes absolutely killed the Spurs chances of advancing. Strickland was made the scapegoat after that terrible pass in the Portland playoff series. However, Strickland was, quite frankly, the best PG the Spurs had had since Johnny Moore. Dude could score, pass, rebound and, oh my how he could get into the paint and to the rim! I was depressed when they shpped him out. Avery was a serviceable PG, but Strickland was just flat-out more talented. IMO, he was one of the most underrated PGs in NBA history.

As Bum has accurately pointed out, the Strickland blunder was compounded by them bringing in Vinny Del Black. And to pass him off as a PG replacement was ludicrous and insulting to any knowledgeable Spurs fan, at that time. Dude was soft as tissue paper and would fold under the weight of defensive pressure. A player who was more interested in raising his golf average than becoming a better player. He was, hands down, the one Spurs I'll always hate the most.

Both these blunders are a result of the poor management that franchise had in place at that time.

Biggest screw up was not doing the deal with the 76ers for Barkley though giving away Strickland certainly hurt.

Wasn't there a chemistry issue with Strickland and our club at that time as well? Didn't he preside as PG over the 90's 'Jailblazer' squad when he landed there after us? Marijuana, fighting, weapon possession charges or something? Not to take away from his skill set but I think we ditched him for a little more than just being cheap. Am I remembering this correctly?

Strickland was no choir boy. And he certainly had his moments. Breaking his hand in that bar fight comes to mind. But there's no denying that when the Spurs had him the guy could flat out play.

Actually, I think David asked if it was a picture book. And he said it with so much sarcasm it was hilarious.

You want him to speak the truth? How Drob couldn't win it till Duncan got there? He was trying to be nice since DRob is in the hall soon. He could have spoke his mind, and all would still rip him.

Hmm. Exactly what did Snaq do before Kobe? Oh that's right...he got swept in the finals. And let us not forget the only reason the Magic made the finals that year: Jordan wasn't playing for the Bulls. He couldn't win it till LA with Kobe. No way he could have won in Miami without Wade.

Contrary to popular opinion, the pendulum does, in fact, swing both ways.

(I didn't read the entire thread before posting this. Whott's ownage of TinfoilMexican far exceeds anything I even thought about posting.)
