Anyway, here's Purdue's side of the story

"Well there was a lot of truth to what Horace said, but what was going on was that a couple things were happening.

First of all, the second unit was kicking the first unit's butt and Michael wasn't too happy about it. And we used to do it actually quite often in practice.

Secondly, we were the scout team running some plays of the team we were going to play the next night and Johnny Bach was the defensive coach. And what we used to do was run about five high frequency plays of our opponent. Well one of them was they were going to continue to run the screen-roll to see if Michael was going to continue to try to work his way over the screen over four quarters, because they knew the guy coming off the screen was the shooter. Michael didn't want to go under, neither did Phil (Jackson) or Johnny Bach want Michael to go under. So (the opponent is) going to want to lay some wood on (Jordan), is the terminology, try to knock him off a screen and see, will you continue to do this for four quarters?

So we kept running this play and sometimes my screens were illegal, sometimes they were not. But my job was to make sure I hit him. Well one time he said, 'If you do that again I'm going to make you pay for it.' Well Johnny Bach just stood there and said, 'Run it again.'

So we ran it again, and this time i figured if I'm going to get my money's worth...I nailed him, knocked him to the ground, kind of stood over him a little bit. He stood up, popped me and before I could get him they got us and that was the end of it. He apologized later, but he got me pretty good."
    There you have it.

Purdue kinda asked for it tbh

I seriously doubt it. I also know him and Oakley were good friends so he would not try it with him either but if they were not no way he pulls that crap.
Nobody tried anything with Oakley. Oakley slapped Barkley in front of everyone, and Barkley didn't have the guts to go after him. He did that to Tyrone Hill as well over a bet.

Oakley was a crazy dude, and no one in the history of the league could have possibly taken him out (five bouncers with handcuffs). I would pay to watch an Oakley Willis Reed brawl.

BTW, Jordan befriended Oakley because when they were both Bulls, Jordan saw him as his personal body guard.

Then when Oakley was with the Knicks, Jordan saw the Knicks as his primary roadblock, and befriending Oakley would help in not being hit too hard when he drove to the rim.

    Umm...no.

Did Jordan ever throw a teammate under the bus to police? Did Jordan claim crappy teammates cost him additional MVPs? Did Kobe have friendships with superstars on other teams the way Jordan was friends with Magic, Barkley etc?

Jordan was ultra-compe ive. Kobe is a .
    You forgot the raping.

Magic tells a great story of playing poker at 2 in the morning with Jordan in Barcelona (they made an animated version).

How many players have great "Kobe stories"?

lol MJ didnt give a about Barkley
Are you saying they werent frends (and probably still would be if Barkley didnt criticize Jordan as owner).

These are two guys who vacationed together, did commercials together, did Oprah interviews together etc. Pretty sure they liked each other.

There was an interview MJ did with Oprah in 96 in which she played a secret clip of Jordan and some of his bulls teammates dancing in some cheap little music video that they made. All of them were wearing goofy 80s shades. Jordan laughed and laughed at himself.

Kobe takes himself WAY too seriously to do something like that. As Smush said, Kobe wouldnt even TALK to him when he tried to bring up football etc.

Theyre different people with different personalities. Just because Jordan lost his temper from time to time doesnt mean he was a the way Kobe is a .

True, Ohm. But I just find the media narrative interesting. Which is why I hate the MVP award race. not just in the NBA but in baseball as well. At least, recently baseball has done less "story" MVP's and focused more on stats such as WAR etc. I have seen Kirk Gibson and Terry Pendleton win MVP's because of great "stories". Kobe got his MVP in a very good not truly great year (for him). Nash won two and maybe deserved one. I just think the media shapes to much of our opinions on players and teams and the stats movement should help but often times just used to further agendas like the bashing of Tony upstairs.

MVP awards (all awards, really) are popularity contests, dog and pony shows and money chasing propaganda. I'm not saying that sometimes the most deserving player and the agenda push don't cross paths, but that's what it is... designed the push and sell the product.

Look man, I love MJ as a player but you can't buy into his BS as this charismatic leader that everybody adores. The overwhelming amount of evidence which wasn't made public before are now available for us to look at. Jordan, like most great players is a insufferable bag. I followed his stint as both GM and player in Washington and he was pretty much hated by his staff. There was always uneasiness about Jordan's arrangement with the organization. The "Flaming got" incident that pretty much destroyed Kwame Brown's confidence from day one, to his constant bereavement of the other players.

He could be an asshole but some people make it like yelling at teammates at all is a negative. These are grown men who barely get through college at most points..yelling, intimidation, challenging them physically is unfortunately often the most effective method of motivation. If the guys in this thread were coaches or players I'm guessing they would get tired of the "pretty please stop screwing up " type speeches pretty quick.

I'm in the camp of people who believes that, most people who grew in that generation scoff at these type sensationalism reported by the media. I had to react since fans of todays game paints Jordan in a different light.

Because the thread is suppose to be about "what if Jordan was around today would he get the same criticism leveled at players like Kobe". Someone even said Jordan was WORSE than Kobe.

But Jordan didnt have feud after feud with his teammates like Kobe did. Like I said, he was overly-compe ive and had a temper but was still a like-able guy.

LOTS of players can do bad things and still be like-able. Barkely threw a dude through a glass window at a bar, spit on a fan, chased a ref through the tunnels etc. Media still loved him not because he "played in a different era" but because he was funny, genuine, exciting and had great camaraderie with teammates.

Jordan got a "pass" not because he played in a different era but because he was able to charm the media, his teammates and his fans. Watch that Oprah interview...hes got her eating out of his hand. When youre that charming, handsome, intelligent, articulate etc, NO ONE CARES if you once punched a teammate in practice.

But if you scream at the GM during practice that your teammates are soft as charmin etc in front of the media, youre not "pushing your teammates". Youre trying to embarrass them. Dont use "todays era of scrutiny" as an excuse as to why Kobe acts like an asshole every day.

"I know what's gonna happen. We'll wait until the last minute and then they'll say something like they couldn't get a deal done because of the cap or somebody pulled out at the last minute. It happens here all the time. I don't know why I'm surprised every year."

    Quote:
"He can't do anything with the ball. Don't give it to him." - Michael yelling at Paxson who passed the ball to Perdue

    Quote:
"You ever hear of a guy, six-eleven maybe and two hundred sixty pounds, a guy big and fat like that and he can't get but two rebounds, if that many, running all over the damn court and he gets two rebounds? Big guy like that and he gets one rebound. Can't even stick his ass into people and get more than that...Big, fat, fat guy. One rebound in three games. Power forward. Quote:
"They're not interested in winning. They just want to sell tickets, which they can do because of me. They won't make any deals to make us better. And this Kukoc thing. I hate that. They're spending all their time chasing this guy."

MJ and Kobe are both sociopaths but the reason MJ was able to get away with more stuff was because his social skills were light years ahead of Kobe. MJ was better at charming and manipulating people. He knew which people to befriend to his benefit such as having Oakley as his bodyguard. If you think about it if MJ was on the Lakers he would have been able to manipulate turn the whole entire team against Shaq. Both suck as people and this is basically like debating who was the better dictator Sadaam or Kim Jung.

Not it is not. I used Lebron as my example to avoid this EXACT issue. But In addition to how amusing it is to watch the media impact on opinion of players by common fans I have gained more insight on Kobe haters so for that thank you.

But back to the topic at hand, Saying that Player x was worse doesnt change the dynamics. of my observation. Jordan is still teflon. I dont think the media climate is the only reason and I stand by that. Again plenty of other threads to disparage Rotator cuff. Yes someone else said MJ was worse I almost responded to that message saying that I dont know if true or not ...but that shouldnt matter this is about the GOAT not the carbon copy.
