Accepting a settlement in a criminal sexual assault case should be a crime.
once you've pressed charges, yeah. you're wasting a lot of state resources having them work up the case only to drop it later because you wont testify.
It does also calls into question what kind of evidence the prosecution had when your case rests entirely on the testimony of the victim.

I think it absolutely is a crime to make an explicit agreement where someone won’t testify in a criminal matter as part of a civil settlement, but there’s just a lot of ways a good lawyer can structure around that.
As I see it, if you take a settlement and agree not to testify, you were either lying about your original claim, or you're putting other potential victims in danger of being assaulted by the person you helped go free.
It's one of the things we don't talk about enough with the Michael Jackson case. All of those parents accepting payments, if the claims were valid, were just putting future kids in jeopardy.

Money will almost always trump morals and principles.
I can't imagine letting my child's abuser go free in exchange for any amount of money. It really makes me question the claims altogether. But fortunately I've never been in such a situation.
I'm certain most feel that way, but how many get fat sacks of money they've only dreamed of waived in their faces to feel different?
