Dude averaged 26+ ppg over what the last 30 games last year in Atlanta. If you looked at all the players that did that, he would be in the top 2 or 3.

If you can't recognize that fact and the fact that he was big in the playoffs and now is already tearin it up in the preseason while Manu, Barry, Brown and whoever else the Spurs picked up continue to struggle then you don't know crap about basketball or you are Pop's twin brother.

why do people think so much of sjax?
Because his shooting helped lift us from contender to champion. He may not be a great PCT shooter...but his timing is awesome.

    1Park1 has a point.

So far in the preseason the starting lineup has dominated the opponent while the bench has come in to lose the game.

People who buy winning lottery tickets also have awesome timing.

...and of course i would be wrong to say SJax didn't help the spurs win the championship when he made all of those three pointers in game six. but i would have to be very forgetful to not remember how his turnovers in the first quarter dug the spurs a big hole. he basically dug his own hole and then filled it up. Jax is the kind of player who both sucks and is awesome. Mario Eli was a perfect fit before the defensive rule changes. Jaren Jackson got lucky. Hedo was a wuss. Barry is almost all positives in his role with the spurs. The spurs need a certain kind of player in that position, and if Brent can work on his D (and try making a few shots in a spurs uniform), he fills that slot to a T. thanks for your help Jax, but i prefer barry.

I think Barry'll be fine, he's a better all around player than Jax, and he brings a ton of things to the team, and unlike Hedo Barry wants the big shot. Barry will help this team, but I'm not going to give him credit for being able to hit big baskets(our #1 need from him) until he actually does it,....Reason? See; Turkoglu, Hedo - Last Season; Smith, Steve - 01-02; Del Negro, Vinny - Entire Career.

And Jax had 3 big games 6's that run. Turnover or not, he still shot well under intense, late quarter playoff pressure in series clinching games...His TO's did not prevent us from winning a le. For that reason many of us give him credit for having the heart of a champion and being a key to our le win.

Basically, we remember Jax fondly and overlook his flaws because he was pretty damn clutch. Barry hasn't proven that yet...Hopefully he will.

yes, he tries hard. I do think that his turnovers in game six vs. the nets were a hole he dug himself out of with his late game heroics. and i've cheered for Jax many times, even in Atlanta. I just think Barry is a more comfy fit. On a systematic team like the spurs, he is the round block in the round hole player that is just what the spurs need in that role. Sjax has always struck me as a 50/50 player whose upside equalizes his downside. though jax had some great games, barry is still better in that role... unless he can't get it together. but a player known for his consistency is most likely just feeling some pins and needles. He'll be fine. if i hadn't seen him burn the spurs with that three two years ago, i'd feel more ambiguous about him. but something about him just feels right.

...we're sitting here talking about PRESEASON, not a game, not a game, not a game, but we're talking about PRESEASON.
Now I know that I'm supposed to lead by example and all that but I'm not shoving that aside like it don't mean anything. I know it's important, I honestly do but we're talking about PRESEASON. We're talking about PRESEASON man. We're talking about PRESEASON. We're talking about PRESEASON. We're not talking about the game. We're talking about PRESEASON. When you come to the arena, and you see me play, you've seen me play right, you've seen me give everything I've got, but we're talking about PRESEASON right now.

to quote AI, if i may be so bold. It all doesn't start to matter until Nov. 3rd. And knowing how inclined our Spurs are to early season doldrums are y'all really ready to count them out already because Barry's having a cold PRESEASON? I'll guarantee right now that this guy will WIN more then a couple games for us in April and May when we need clutch shooting. I don't care if he doesn't hit the broad side of a barn now, as long as Popp can get him to buy into the defensive nature of the team and give him plenty of open opportunities.

I'm not a bandwagon guy( , i've been an Aggie all my life) but relax and enjoy the ups and downs of the PRE and Early season and the ups of the latter season and postseason will be all the better.

"to quote AI, if i may be so bold. It all doesn't start to matter until Nov. 3rd."

the preseason, season, post season and off season are all still part of the season. otherwise this message board would shut down between the end of the playoffs and the beginning of the regular season. If the post season didn't exist then the Heat would not have aquired Shaq and the Rockets would not have aquired TMac. The Spurs would not have aquired Brent Barry and the Pacers wouldn't have gotten Stephen Jackson. If the pre-season did not exist then the first ten games of the regular-season would suck. If you think that the pre season and off season don't matter, then wait until the regular season to post. otherwise accept that these segments of the season do matter and post away.

Barry will never average more than 20 a game, neither will Manu....

    Stephen Jackson will...

But your right, its preseason, Barry is a vet and he will come along but the Spurs are still weak at Center and backup pg.

Spurs won't get past the second round with this lineup.

Not with a good team. He didn't even keep it up for a whole season with ATL.

Spurs are still weak at Center and backup pg.

That's ridiculous. Beno is going to be as good a backup as anybody by the end of the season if he stays healthy, and if he doesn't, I'll take the Spurs chances with Barry and Manu bringing the ball up when TP is resting. As for center, who in the West isn't weak at that position? There's Houston, but there is no way you can expect them to put the Spurs out of the playoffs. Jamaal Magloire is an All-Star(?!?), but N.O. won't be seeing playoffs for a long time. Then there's Sacto with Brad Miller, but as a team the Spurs were better than them by the end of last year and the gap has only gotten wider. If the Spurs don't make it past the second round, it will probably be because they drew the T'wolves, and I sure as am not counting on Kandiman to be the guy that gives them headaches.
