^^Or trade Atkin for a pick? If not, who do you think they will wave?
A trade is another possibility and Atkins involved makes some sense since Conroy is a PG.
They are too working on a buyout with Eddie jones, maybehe will be waive just before signing Conroy.

Memphis is playing against Sacramento and Eddie Jones hasn't played for the moment (it's the 2nd quarter), it looks like he will be bought out tomorrow.

    Ex-Husky Conroy heads to Memphis

    By Bob Condotta
    Seattle Times staff reporter

Will Conroy called from the airport.

    Destination?

The NBA, as the former Garfield Bulldog and Washington Husky signed a 10-day contract by the Memphis Grizzlies after having spent the last year and a half waiting for a chance while plying his trade with Tulsa in the NBA Developmental League.

Conroy spent Monday flying to Memphis, and his first game in uniform figures to be Wednesday night when the Grizzlies host fellow Seattle native Jason Terry and the Dallas Mavericks.

"I'm excited, but you know, I've got to relax a little bit," Conroy said.

That will be hard to do, however, as getting the NBA call fulfills a lifelong dream and completes a long journey that began when he used to pay $2.50 to play all day at the Salvation Army in Portland, where he lived before moving to Seattle at age 8.

Once here, he became a team captain at both Garfield and Washington, becoming the Huskies' all-time assists leader after joining the team initially as a walk-on in 2001. As a senior, he helped lead Washington to the Pac-10 Conference tournament championship and the Sweet 16 in 2005.

But unlike teammates Brandon Roy, Nate Robinson and Bobby Jones — all drafted into the NBA the last two years — Conroy went untaken.

He spent last season with Tulsa, turning down chances to play overseas that would have paid more money. Riding buses through the D-League, he was told, would make it easier to get the call to the NBA.

"I'm not a guy who chases the money but chases the dream," he said. "My dream was to play in the NBA."

Conroy thought the dream was coming true when he was offered a contract by the San Antonio Spurs. But offseason surgery to repair a stress fracture in his left leg waylaid those plans. Conroy had a rod inserted in the leg, and some wondered if it might end his NBA chances for good.

"I didn't doubt that I would make it back, I just doubted if I would have my same ability," he said.

Conroy recovered enough to get a training camp invite from the Charlotte Bobcats, but played sparingly and was cut early on.

"I wasn't healthy at the time," he said. "I just wanted to go and see where I was."

Conroy headed back to Tulsa, and as he got healthy — he said he only recently has begun feeling comfortable jumping off his left leg — he tore up the D-League. As of Monday, he was leading the league in assists at 10.3 per game, while averaging 15.8 points and 5.4 rebounds. He also had three triple-doubles, and the front page of the league's Web site touted him as the league's career leader in that category.

Conroy said his play had him convinced that "it wasn't a matter of if, but when" he would get a call from an NBA team.

It came Monday morning as he lifted weights with the rest of his Tulsa team.

He had told his coach, Joey Meyer, of plans to drive to Oklahoma City later in the day to see Roy and the Portland Trail Blazers play Monday night.

"He [Meyer] said if he were me, he wouldn't go anywhere," Conroy said. The call came a short while later.

A 10-day contract offers no guarantees, though the fact that the Grizzlies have the worst record in the NBA at 12-34 figures to provide Conroy ample opportunity to state his case.

For now, he has a short-term goal of simply staying around long enough to make a homecoming when the Grizzlies play at Seattle on Feb. 20.

"That will be sweet if I make it to then," he said.

    So close, yet....

Congrats to Will. I had no idea about the injury he dealt with.

Now I wonder what happened to Vincent Grier.

Veteran guard Eddie Jones didn't officially play due to a coach's decision, but has agreed to a contract buyout with the team. The Griz could waive Jones as soon as today, and reportedly will sign former Washington guard Will Conroy to a 10-day contract. Conroy, who played for NBDL's Tulsa 66ers, told a Seattle paper Monday that he was headed for Memphis.

I like Jones length and the fact that he can still hit the three.

Memphis Signs Will Conroy To 10-Day Deal
    30th January, 2007 - 1:45 pm
    Press Release -
Memphis Grizzlies President of Basketball Operations Jerry West announced today the team has signed guard Will Conroy to a 10-day contract.

Conroy joins the Grizzlies from the NBA Development League where he was averaging 15.8 points, 5.4 rebounds and a league-high 10.3 assists in 26 games with the Tulsa 66ers this season. The 6-2, 195 pound guard becomes the eighth Gatorade call-up this season, and the second from the D-League in Grizzlies’ history.

I don't think Spurs want to add another old swingman.
I can see him ending with Miami or Dallas.

If he makes it past Feb. and eventually as an NBA regular, no doubt this will become one of our Spur'sTalk myths and legends about how easy it was to see his value and how stupid the FO/Pop was for not cutting someone to sign him.

Jones has been waived and Conroy is his replacement. There are reports that Jones will sign with the Heat, but I'm not sure who the Heat will cut to make room for his old ass.

Now I wonder what happened to Vincent Grier.
    http://www.startribune.com/503/story/970697.html

Former Gophers men's basketball star Vincent Grier left the NBA Development team in Sioux Falls last weekend to sign a contract in Korea.

Grier will receive a significant pay increase from the D-League, but in leaving almost certainly gives up any chance of receiving a 10-day NBA contract this season.

Many believed Grier was in line for an NBA look. He averaged 19.5 points and 5.9 rebounds in 17 games for Sioux Falls, hitting 51.3 percent of his field-goal attempts (120 of 234). The 6-5 guard had been the final cut of the Miami Heat during training camp last fall.

Grier signed a one-year deal in Korea, which would make him eligible for an NBA training camp before the 2007-08 season.

Thanks, I suspected something like that -- there wasn't even notice that he had left the team. He reminded me a little of Devin Brown when I saw him.

Well, considering they don't play EWill and James White while our backup PG isn't exactly strong, I think if he blows up there will be no way not to see this as a mistake. He's been putting up triple doubles at will.

I figure the Spurs won't scour the minors until after the trade deadline if they still feel like they have holes. Unfortunately, most of the best players will be gone by then. Guys like Grier and Devin Green are going after paychecks probably in the same manner as Noel Felix so they can play in the D-League full-time next season if necessary. In Green's case it was extremely premature, as ten-day contracts couldn't even be signed when he left.

The Spurs need to decide whether they are going to use Williams at all if they don't trade him. If not, better to give his roster spot to someone who might be worth keeping beyond this season. There aren't any point guards left that are as ready as Conroy was to make the jump, though guys like Pooh Jeter are intriguing. There are a couple of swingmen left that could help in the future like Sean Banks, who is now the most productive scorer in the D-League since he joined the LA team.

God, the more and more we have to watch Beno and Vaughn play the more and more I hate that we didn't get this guy, or anyone. There has to be an NBA vet out there who can provide something while on the court because right now those 2 detract a lot and don't provide a damn thing.

Not really related, but Aaron Miles (a former D League PG) is playing really well now in Europe. He should be back in nba next year.

Aaron Miles is an NBA level player. I don't know how he didn't make the league as some team's third string PG.

The next best available PG in the minor leagues is Pooh Jeter ... and he's a borderline third stringer at best. Conroy was the only PG available that could become a solid backup PG in the NBA.

Once Atkins is traded, there's a good chance that Conroy is going to start putting up big numbers. At that point, it's going to be hard to stop Spurs fans from jumping off the ledge if Beno is still sucking.

    Bad luck.
He twist his ankle just before the training camp (with Portland).

Aaron Miles is very active on the defensive end, i liked that about him. Sounds like a good spurs backup point guard trait to me.

Will Conroy is back on the market. The Grizzlies let him go.

Picking him up makes sense for the Spurs, especially if Beno isn't in the plans anymore. If Eric Williams isn't going to get traded, just waive him and pick up Conroy.

People need to realize that at this point, and probably forever, Will Conroy is not the player Beno Udrih is.

Beno is finished as a Spur. They need someone to backup Vaughn.
