The big myth about McC was that he was a Repug moderate, probably because of some maverick-y bull , but he was neocon, always voted UP the military budget, and was in fact very conservative, not moderate.

the president's appointments aren't complete without the advise and consent of the US Senate.
legislation isn't homework from the president, it's the work product of a co-equal branch of government.

notwithstanding, John McCain by almost any measure was a very conservative US Senator.
He was quite a hawk as well but he came from a military family so I think he just had a military mindset. Hard to say he didn't know the cost of war though given his experience.
Of course he was, he was just from a very different school of politics than the current gotcha, drama queen cadre of pols. I wasn't a fan of McCain's positions in a lot of areas, but he was respected by almost every peer.
It's a school that I hope makes a comeback some day, one of reaching out, debating, negotiating for something that might not be all you want, but at least what you can get.
The level of uselessness and unpopularity of Congress has escalated hand in hand with the larger degree of polarization and vitriol. It doesn't work for them and it doesn't work for us.
That's how we end up with no budget and omnibus spending bills, last minute useless government shutdowns, risking the US credibility over some personal political gambit, etc.
Ridiculous. If I can have a respectful conversation with you, even though we don't see eye to eye in a lot of things, there's no reason any two civilized adults can't do the same.
Unless they're patently stupid, or they're putting their personal goals over what's best for their cons uency, which is a major contradiction to being a public servant.

The feckless Dem establishment, eg the Clinton faction, is also corrupted by money.
There is no hope that the Repug party will return to its orientation that ended with Nixon and the start of the oligarchy/VRWC in the mid-70s.

No. He would sell out conservatives at every turn. He was very unliked by Republicans. Sure, he pretended to be conservative enough to get the nomination. He didn't give a after that; and he was gonna over conservatives in the end had he won. It's pretty much just as well that Obama won.
