I don't think government is capable or set up to do that. There isn't really a set formula for that kind of stimulus, and nothing has ever stopped unrelated spending or other crap from getting into large bills.

Win presidential primary>choose vp> GOP convention.
    Right...

Open primaries where democrats voted also.

I really doubt he would have been the winner if only republicans could vote for a republican in the primaries.

Huckabee would have been absolutely annihilated in a national election... plus he most likely wouldn't have picked Palin as a running mate.

Romney I'm not so sure of what would have happened... but I'd assume that even more of the moderate vote would have gone to Obama since Romney was more to the right than McCain.

People say that McCain was such a horrible candidate because he was not a real conservative... but he was the most electable out of the bunch for exactly that reason.

Yeah, someone much more conservative would have won.
It would have been tough for anyone with an R next to their name but there is a script that must be followed for any presidential candidate to have a chance. Win over the base then move to the center to grab independents. It's the standard tactic that works. It's what Obama did. McCain never had the base. Palin helped get some of them but not enough obviously. Without her, he would have been stomped much worse.

Did you see his speech at cpac after he won the nomination. It was, let's say, awkward.

This wasn't the only time he was booed during the speech. They were even booing when he was being introduced. You can't win without the base. It's not suprising democrats are encouraging the GOP to run another moderate in 2012.

The decisive votes are only in the middle if you have the base.

*When Palin came along, erstwhile and future republicans in the middle bolted for Obama...or lost heart entirely*

McCain had the base. They may not have liked him, but they'd have held their nose and voted for him even if he had named another moderate as his VP. All Palin did was make the base feel better about the choice that they would have made anyways.

Not true. I voted for McCain. I did not vote for senator Gordon Smith. I voted for Mickey, Pluto, or someone else. I spoiled my vote, because I was not going to vote for Smith, the RINO. I voted for Palin, and likely would have spoiled that vote if he had a different running mate. You can bet, there were countless other people who did the same thing, or stayed home and didn't vote.

So McCain could have picked someone more appealing to moderates without risking losing your vote.

We're in the same boat though, because I refused to vote for either of those ass clowns too.

Despite the increased democratic turnout the overall turnout for the election only increased 1% from 2004. Some held their noses and voted for him, many didn't even show up.
