26.7 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 3 assists on 54% shooting (including 57% from three and 95% from the line) in 38 minutes a game?

Yes, I'd say that makes Dirk a warrior for this series.
Dirk was unarguably the #1 in this series but his team still couldn't wriggle out of the swamp with the #2, 3 and 4 guys all being Spurs.

That reminds of people who were criticizing C-Webb for not playing like a real PF.

That was utter BS; he was playing on his strenghts, and was a super player (and fun to watch)

i agree with the OP. the superlatives are getting out of hand. dirk is an elite jumpshooter, a scoring machine, and a matchup nightmare. OK.

he is not a warrior, not a dominant player, and not worth 20 million.

he only plays one end of the court. how many corner 3's did we attempt with dirk under the basket, not even attempting to help close out?

for all his scoring prowess cant get himself a quality look in the clutch. (not the same as being a choker, I havent called him that). tony and manu have no trouble creating space for a J. dirk has to shoot a 20 ft fade away

he has trouble with double teams. tim and manu have no problems finding an open player or splitting it themselves. dirk either makes a bad pass, forces a bad shot, or in the best case scenario makes a safe pass but it doesnt capitalize on the attention he's getting.

he gets frustrated and loses composure.

despite playing less minutes and attempting less shots (and having a broken nose), manu shot almost as many FT as dirk. taking it to the hole > jumpshooting, basic truth of basketball. when the mavs offense was stagnant in game 3, dirk was what, something like 1-5 in the 3rd Q? last night, when they were getting locked down in the 1st, dirk was bricking 20 footers while the spurs were getting more points in the paint than mavs total points.

dirk had two good games, game 1 and game 5. game 1 he shot great, but IMO game 5 was the one he was really good- there he actually played help D, was physical on the glass and took the ball inside. the rest of the games, he was unable to respond to physical play, was unable to take over his teams offense (despite being billed as a top scoring talent all time), and gave his team nothing on D and nothing in leadership/poise.

at the end of the day, the mavs have 10 consecutive 50 win seasons, one of only 4 teams to do it. they are the only one to not win a ship, and the only one to lose in the first round 4 times:

    10
    08
    07
    04

    only 03 WCF, and 06 Finals, 01, 02, 05, 09 2nd round exits.

dirk said this was his best team... it was still a jumpshooting team, and still lost in the 1st round.

he's a great player... but not a number 1 guy. if the spurs could pick him up, sure I'd take him, he can compliment duncan, but not for 20M. that means giving up tony or manu, and while they may not be the elite jumpshooters dirk is, they do more damage in the paint and have better playmaking skills and better defenders. I'd much rather have those 3 things (for less money) than dirk's ungodly shooting stroke.

what happened to taking over? to creating for yourself? maybe if he played inside more, his teammates would try to do the same instead of shooting J's all the time?

and that doesnt excuse his lack of D. he doesnt need to shut people down, but for this series the only game I saw him play help D for at least 50% of the game was game 5. if you are going to call out his teammates for not helping on O, why give him a pass for making it 5 on 4 at the other end?

oh, and the guy who compared with reggie miller-

miller was better at creating his own shot and was one of the clutchest players of all time. say dirk's rebounding offsets that and you are arguing dirk is about equal to reggie miller, OK. that's not Duncan/Shaq/KG/kobe/lebron/20M territory.

midrange jumpshots dont collapse the D like taking it inside does- less opportunities to make plays for others, less likelihood of drawing defenders and opening the paint for offensive boards. they dont draw fouls like taking it inside does (though dirk does an excellent job of making up for this). and they arent as high percentage as a shot at the basket. Wasn't it reggie, speak of the devil, dogging the mavs for relying on outside shooting in an elimination game? It doesnt matter if it goes in or not, those are the shots you want them to take.

I'm not exactly sure how opposing coaches putting guards and/or small forwards on Nowitzki is Nowitzki's fault. You take what the defense gives you. Dirk is not much of an in the paint, bang it in post up player. To force him to play that kind of offensive game makes little sense. He plays according to his strengths. And let's be clear here. Dude was getting knocked around during most of the series and still put up good numbers with a hand in his face or a body on him nearly every shot. If he plays little or no defense, that's up to the coaching staff to remedy.

I couldn't care less if people want to call him a "warrior" or not. To argue it is as lame, if not more, than to argue whether or not a team is a "dynasty". Despite the fact that he plays on a team I despise, Dirk Nowitzki is a of a player. And though his particular style of play isn't my favorite, I have a huge amount of respect for him.
