The NRA wants zero restrictions, open carry, no gun registry etc because they want citizens to be able to rise up against a tyrannical, oppressive government. Well, the lunatics who're going after cops probably convinced themselves that they are being oppressed by a tyrannical police force. There will never be a government that will satisfy everyone in society. There will always be a considerable % who feel wronged by the system, be it aggrieved black people, rural militias, white supremacists, Muslim fundamentalists, anti-abortion groups etc. So this is a feature, not a bug, of the system.
