The raiders were taking all their sweet time at the huddles and running the ball between the tackles with both hands on the ball, after realizing the Chargers weren't going to stop the clock. What "kill" are you folks talking about? It doesn't make sense. If Jacob would have been stopped at the line of scrimmage on that last run, the Raiders probably don't even attempt the FG.
The Raiders were clearly gonna let the clock run on that 3rd down. If the Chargers just let them they run a less-organized run play that ends in fourth down and the clock running out.

I think you missunderstood my point. I was talking about LAC's coach decision of not using TO's to stop the clock and save time in case they had another go at an offensive drive, not about that TO he called on 3rd down because he probably saw something he didn't like.

Although, now that I think about it, it really didn't make any sense for them to stop the clock. A win and a tie was pretty much the same for them.

its funny i guess, but i dont understand the whole "staley ruined the game with a timeout" theory

the raiders ran a play with with 1:20 on the clock. play took a few seconds, say, down to 1:15. they then let the clock run down and staley took a timeout with 38 seconds left. so he basically let 37-38 seconds run off the clock then called a timeout. and before he called a timeout, the raiders were not in a kneel down formation, they were clearly going to run a play anyway.

he called a timeout (he said he wanted to subs ute a better run defending group in). the raiders then proceeded to run the ball anyway and got a good gain, then kicked the FG.

i'd understand the criticism more if Staley called the timeout right away with like 1:15 on the clock, because in theory that would scare the raiders into thinking "if we just kill the clock and they take another timeout, we will punt the ball to them and give a chance to win" or something like that. but staley took the timeout after the clock was already bled, and the raiders were running an offensive play regardless

i guess the criticism could be that the timeout gave the raiders the opportunity to make a more advantageous play-call... but thats very different from "lol he made the raiders when they were trying to tie."

Would the Steelers have missed the playoffs if the game ended in a tie? If so then , that would have by far been the most hilarious outcome.

Yeah...that's correct. I would have liked to see that chaos.

Roethlisberger in his last season getting locked out of the playoffs because of a tie would be the end to his career that that rapist deserves.

yeah. steelers would have missed it and both raiders/chargers would have gotten in lol. there was a lot of game theory in overtime re: letting the clock bleed out

here's hoping Ben can turn back the clock one last time and take mahomes out on his way out of the league

Would have been some epic trolling if they played for the tie.

Would be very surprised if New England beats the Raiders btw.

i'd be very surprised if new england beats the raiders because it would require that they meet in the AFC championship game

though as raiders are the 5 seed, we could theoretically host the championship game if one of the patriots/steelers gets there as well

    raiders @ bengals
    patriots @ bills
    steelers @ chiefs

if the raiders upset the bengals, most likely scenario (chiefs beat steelers, bill beat pats) is we get to play the ans round 2 and duck mahomes/allen for at least one more round

you're right, I misread the seeding.

Haven't paid as much attention this season as I normally do.

bears firing nagy/pace made a lot of sense

vikings firing zimmer made sense (still think spielman is a solid gm, dont like that he was let go)

    dolphins firing Flores is moronic

Joe Judge still having a job is inexplicable, but at least Gettleman is retiring. what a trainwreck he's been with the Giants

Doubtful that it happens but would be amazing if Flores would take his old job with New England back. Belichick is so much more effective as a head coach when he's not also calling the plays on defense.

Flores has to be the #1 or at worst #2 most coveted HC out there... i doubt he settles for a coordinating job

right now there are vacancies with the Broncos, Raiders, Jaguars, Dolphins, Vikings, Bears (lmao at Giants keeping Judge)

Flores, Harbaugh are almost certainly going to get jobs among those. i think Doug Pederson would also be a great hire. then you have the offensive coordinator types like Kellen Moore, Byron Leftwich, Brian Daboll, Eric Bienemy who i'm sure we'll hear about quite a bit.

Yeah I said it was unlikely.

Even if Flores can't get a head coaching gig, he'll either just take a year off or he'll be very picky about taking a defensive coordinator job on a team with an elite defense.

I mean...it would have made sense. Like a lot of sense. Running the clock out would have guaranteed a playoff berth. Kicking a FG leaves some possibility of losing the game. It was a weird timeout by the Chargers. Mainly because they let a ton of time run off before they called it.

id rather have the steelers in the playoffs than the chargers

    also, just the chargers

Rich Bisaccia: We were talking about taking a tie - ProFootballTalk (nbcsports.com)

“It was [a] conversation,” coach Rich Bisaccia told reporters after the 35-32 overtime win. “We were talking about it. . . . We ran the ball there, and they didn’t call a timeout. So I think they were probably thinking the same thing. And then we had the big run. When we got the big run, it got us in advantageous field goal position. . . . We were certainly talking about it on the sideline. We wanted to see if they were gonna take a timeout or not on that run. They didn’t, so we thought they were thinking the same thing. And then we popped the run in there and gave us a chance to kick the field goal to win it. So, we were certainly talking about it.

Nobody wants a loss or tie on their record. Especially coaches. They all care about their career record, whether they admit it or not. So it made perfect sense to kick the FG.

Having said that, the comedy of the situation is not lost on me, and just the fact that it came that close to a tie is hilarious.

obviously they thought about it. if they didnt get into comfortable FG range they would have played it safe, killed clock, punted, etc.

when jacobs ran for 10 yards on 3rd and 4, they no longer had to worry about it. staley's timeout didnt do anything

to the contrary gave Raiders more time to select a play just as much as it gave rookie Charger coach time to come up with the ty defense.
As noted in above posts, previous Raider run was being real conservative, holding on to ball with both hands etc.

To me the timeout favored Raiders far more then Chargers.

    the bolded is obviously hindsight

the chargers defensive personnel on the field was geared toward the pass (raiders were in a 2 minute drill). when it was clear the raiders were just trying to run the ball for a first down (either to kill clock or get into FG range), staley wanted to get run stopping personnel out, so he took a timeout to sub guys in. its noteworthy for this reason that he only called the timeout when the play clock was down to 2-3 seconds (he was ok with letting the clock bleed toward a tie). if jacobs didnt rumble for 10 yards, i dont know if the raiders would have attempted a 57 yard field goal, or if they then would have been content with the tie. maybe they would have anyway, maybe not.

maybe they stuff jacobs for a 4 yard loss. maybe the better run stopping personnel draw a hold. you never know.

obviously it didnt matter because after they subbed in their run personnel they gave up a 10 yard run on 3rd and 4

I’d be surprised if Kellen Moore is in high demand at this point tbh. Early in the season yes but the second half he’s basically been Jason Garrett Jr with the playcalling
