The US toppled Afghanistan in a matter of weeks, kept Afghanistan under occupation for 20 ing years, but "lost" because of neoconservative hopium about turning Afghanistan into a liberal Democracy (we even rejected the Taliban's offer to surrender early on in the war)

The USSR tried occupying Afghanistan and got its pushed in by the Mujahidden before ever coming close to saying the country was under Soviet control. They never received anything close to a surrender offer.

Somehow, MM thinks our performance in Afghanistan vis a vis the USSR's performance is an indictment on how we would fare in a war against them

Honestly if the Ukraine invasion continues to go this poorly, teaming up with Putin to take on the U.S. is going to be the last thing on Xi's mind. What he'll actually start doing is eyeing vulnerable parts of Siberia/Eastern Russia if the Russian Armed Forces turn out to be a total paper tiger. Xi isn't interested in taking on the US just for the fun of it when there are much easier targets out there.

China and Russia fought a mini war over their border as late as 1969 and China remembers all the land Russia took from it when China was a basket case in the 1800s.

The Russian military hasn't fought a large scale war of any kind since 1989, and their defense industry imploded when the USSR collapsed.

It is obvious their logistics net is not up to the challenge.

We occupied Afghanistan and Iraq with ease, creating a functional government in each country that could stand alone without US involvement is where we struggled, and that has nothing to do with military strength or how we would fare in a nuclear battle with Russia. So far, Russia can't even get to the part where they successfully occupy a country they share a border with, let alone the part where they're able to successfully install a puppet government that functions independently. The pathetic part is that Russia is invading in a manner where they don't care about how much human life is lost along the way. If we invaded Iraq in the same manner - where we weren't concerned about the loss of life - we'd have been able to topple Baghdad in a few days.

I agree 100% with this. American infantry soldiers/pilots were scared less they'd go to jail for harming any innocent civilians in Iraq/Afghanistan, so much to the point where U.S. military people were quitting in droves, not because they were scared of the Baathists or jihadists but of what their own governmnet would do them if they dare injure someone who hasn't provoked / attacked first. When I learned of that about a decade ago from guys who had been there firsthand, I was like holy , the USA processes are pathetic and all time wussy.

I mean , waaaaaaaaaay back in 1940, Germany was able to completely conquer France, seize Paris and occupy the whole country, without injuring a single French civilian, and install a puppet government within a month. And that was before nukes and high tech equipment like drones even existed.

Why would Xi want eastern Siberia though? There's nothing but snow and rocks up there. Maybe a limited supply of natural gas if they're willing to brave the cold. Then again there is the potential for controlling the Bering Strait which would indirectly strengthen their position against the US. Seizing Taiwan would be much more profitable for China in the short term, it's a tiny country that's ethnically Han Chinese anyway and has trillions of dollars worth of microchips.
