Anthony Kiedis, Eddie Vedder, Layne Stayley,

Gavin Rossdale had his moments. (sp on the last name)

He may not be rock, but on his rock songs, Chris Daughtry aint half bad.
I love all on your list, and I will always love the Chili Peppers, but Kiedis is one of the mnost overated, worst singers I have ever heard. He has a good sense of what sounds good, but as far as actuall singing talent, I dont think I have ever heard anyone sing a bad version of a Chili peppers song at karaoke, anyone can sing what he sings.
And I hate that rap bull he still does, got tired of that after Blood Sugar

Vedder is the ing man, one of the best voices in history imo

What was so "killing" about it? Because he didnt cite some garage band? Because he likes popular rock? Of those vocalists he mentioned, pick the ones you think "kill(ed) his credibility?"
I don't give two shakes what pusspuss thinks about my taste in music.

    J. Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. fame is another unique and great voice.

If we're going with a classic rock group, Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy is a great choice.

I'd have to second or third any vote for Thom Yorke.

Until Silverchairs "Young Modern" I always loved Daniel Johns' vox as well, but I wouldn't put it up there with the best of the best. His is just a voice I always enjoyed for that style of music.

IMO, Chris Cornell has the greatest rock n roll voice of our generation. He has exceptional range with that whiskey-sour gruffness required to pull it all off.

The vocalists I listed earlier could all sing a completely different genre (and two of them did) and excel because they were blessed with Mariah Carey-like range.

Cornell can only do Rock n Roll, yet he is exceptional (and one uva song writer at that, I still pop in that tune from the Great Expectations soundtrack and ing weep that I didnt write that and couldnt hit the notes on my best day).
Have you heard his collaberation with Pearl Jam, a tribute to the late Andrew Wood of Mother Love Bone? The band is called Temple of the Dog. They worked for that album only. Hunger Strike includes both Cornell and Vedder exchanging vocals.

Also, I too agree about Sunshower from the Great Expectations soundtrack. If you like that, and haven't heard it already, then check out Cornell's solo work, specifically Euphoria Morning. Has a great vibe to it. Every song as a variation from the previous, som softer, some bluesier, some rockier, but all very, very good.

I'm sure a huge Cornell fan like yourself already knew of them, but I felt I should put it out for ya anyways, and if not for you, then for those who enjoy Cornell, but haven't yet heard much beyond Soundgarden and Audioslave.

If older singers count, I'm surprised no one has mentioned Jeff Buckley. His B-side was damn good.

    Bjork.

Not a traditional voice, but I've loved her sound since she fronted The Sugarcubes.

Geddy Lee of Rush (pre 1990, he can't hit high notes for anymore)

Dave Brockie of Gwar (ignore the costumes, listen to the music he owns you and your mom)

I've always likened Bjork to a pixy or a sprite reborn into a human body. She's unlike any other human being I've ever heard, special in a way of her own. Have not heard Volta yet but will probably buy it tommorow.

S dogs of the Universe was truely their best, but you should'nt view that as sad (seeing as how it was released in 1990) but they change, morph, and experiment.

1992's America Must Be Destroyed was like S dogs in response to the republican (neocon?) antisentiments they received when Oderus had a phallic prosthetic during his stage shows (you HAVE to watch Phallus in Wonderland.....)

1994's This Toilet Earth was an experiment, and a successful one. This is where Brockie turely uses his voice as an instrument, as opposed to a just a voice. Saddam a GoGo is not one of their top songs for no reason.

They did some of this and that but after the Middle Era GWAR, 2005's War Party is really when they came back. Bring Back the Bomb, Womb With a View, Decay of Granduer, Reaganator, Krosstika, all are great songs featuring Brokie's amazing vocals as well as a revamped GWAR's speed metal guitar riffs.

Definately more unique. Now they all either sound like Eddie Vedder if they are hard rock, or like whiny little brats if they are doing pop-punk.

Springsteen on Nebraska was great, but that's more folk/acoustic rock...

Yeah. I enjoy Rush, but couldn't stand Lee's vox. But then, I wasn't crazy about Layne Staley's voice either at first. Again, definately a unique voice...
