I think that Argentina would have advanced a lot more without Maradona in '94, but since then Argentina has trouble winning the Copa America and they couldn't reach semi-finals at World Cups since Italy '90. Given the FIFA rankings, success at club level and available talent it should go better.

I'm not sure what happened in Copa America 2011. The game vs Uruguay could have gone either way, but still there were 3 sub-par games out of 4.

The home team is usually better prepared than the rest.
I don't think we had one player in our team that played locally. It's hard to train when every single player plays across Europe. It's no excuse for mediocrity though. Brazil, and to an extent, Uruguay, has the same problem.

Venezuela-Chile should be a good game. This cup has been very even across the board.

That's for sure. Like 80 % of the games ended in a draw no?

Crofl Brazil, it looked like if they missed on purspose.

crofl penalties, 90% of the time the team that did less to win during regulation ends up stealing the game on penalties. When a game ends up in tie, the team with most chances should get the W, imo. This would encourage offensive play.

Uruguay ended up 4th in the WC, and could only win 1 game here (in regular time, IIRC). I think it's just been compe ive.

Chile, Paraguay, and even Argentina and Brazil moved out of the group stage in the WC too... they just play tough out there.

There doesn't seem to be any more favorites.

Maybe so, El Nono, but Argentina and Brasil are obviously still a step above even though they don't look all that good. There's definitely more parity, but is that because other countries have stepped up their game or simply because the powerhouses have come down? I think its the latter.

Yeah I think it's been compe ive but clearly Brazil and Argentina aren't playing even near their full potential, which is the disappointing thing.

Gonna hope for a Uruguay vs Chile final now.

I think the smaller teams have improved. Venezuela used to be the Guadaloupe of the Conmebol. Chile used to be really poor too until Zamorano and Salas came around. Paraguay used to be very limited and easily beatable.
Bolivia used to only win at home because of the al ude. Peru also used to be super weak. They don't roll over anymore.

Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay could be a step above on paper, and probably are favorites to qualify for the next WC. But it's not as easy as it used to be.

What they improved the most is tactically, IMO. They know how to close down the defense and make it really hard to score. Then it's anybody's game. Look at Peru yesterday.

10 years ago, to say Peru and Paraguay would still be in the run and both Brazil and Argentina out, would've been crazy talk.

I tend to think Uruguay has very positive record against Peru, but they won't be 100% after playing 120 minutes.

Paraguay is usually tough to defeat too.

ARG and BRA screwed up by not winning their groups. They would've had easier games that way.

    Edit: Make that ARG only.
