That's not a value, it's a naive bull belief people use to either give themselves hope for a hopeless future or make themselves feel less guilty about being born on 3rd base so they can convince themselves they personally hit a triple.
, I was born on the bench in Bedford Stuyvesant Brooklyn to a single mother with a 10th grade education. I'm relatively successful today because it's never hopeless.

    Empirical.

I do not speak in gross generalities like 'anything is possible' instead I look to specifics ie 'is X possible given situation Y.'

I do not consider ideology such as 'self-reliance.' Very few people have ever existed that have not relied on someone else to cope. Instead, I look at it as 'can I do X by myself or do I need help?'
So do you believe there's enough opportunity for people to pull themselves out of poverty. Not to say more opportunity shouldn't be created, but as it stands today, are the opportunities there?

There are considerably less opportunities for people born into poverty today than people born into poverty 30-40 years ago. Baby boomers use bull phrases like, "The foam ALWAYS rises to the top!" because that's how it was when they were growing up. I went to high school with idk how many kids who worked 10x as hard as I did but nothing was going to create as much opportunity for them as I had because of what I was born with.

there was considerably more violence in Brooklyn 30 years ago. Now it's a hip place. As far as opportunity, rich people do have more because they have access to capital. However, more times than not, rich kids who don't appreciate the value of that capital usually waste the opportunities they were given. That capital goes to booze, drugs and women.

I was born and grew-up poor, so I know a little bit more about how to getting out, self-reliance and an anything is possible at ude is the foundation. Not to say additional help shouldn't be given.

If you want me to play with hypothetical then you need to give me specific hypotheticals. All I am getting is more ideology here. We just view this differently.

As for the general question, I do not think that all poor people are lazy and the solution to their problem is just to work harder. That's been a long standing meme and as the contract with america demonstrated, it doesn't bear out in practice.

The minimum wage is below the poverty line and unemployment is what it is. All the while school funding is shrinking and more and more wealthy partisans are attempting to not have to pay for public education.
