    Obama's Trayvon Problem

By Luther Campbell Thursday, Jul 4 2013

I hope President Barack Obama is tuning in to the George Zimmerman murder trial. It is showing off his greatest failure.
Last week, media pundits, trial commentators, and internet racists ridiculed Rachel Jeantel, the 19-year-old star witness who was on the phone with Trayvon Martin right before Zimmerman shot the boy. This cruel crew made fun of her manner of speech and her embarrassing admission that she cannot read or write in cursive.

Her shortcomings personify the first African-American commander-in-chief's refusal to help this nation's blacks obtain the same opportunities he and his wife had. First-class education helped the first couple become articulate, productive members of society.

Jeantel represents the Obama generation. She began high school in 2009, the first year of his first term. She is one of the hundreds of thousands of African-American children who were supposed to benefit from his promise that change was coming. Almost halfway into the president's second term, most kids attending inner-city high schools speak like Jeantel; that includes everyone from those struggling to maintain a 2.0 grade point average to honor students posting better than a 3.5. I understand Jeantel's plight, because as a public high school volunteer, I mentor teenagers just like her. But when no one is teaching children how to speak proper English, how can anyone expect them to survive in the real world? Forget crumbling on the witness stand. They won't stand a chance during a job interview.

Obama has been too busy spying on Americans and quibbling with Republicans over immigration reform to help fix illiteracy, the greatest challenge facing educators at inner-city schools such as Miami Norland High, where Jeantel is a senior. Just as Obama couldn't do squat about banning guns that kill thousands of African-Americans in cities like Miami and his hometown of Chicago, he has done little to improve literacy and grammar skills of black teenagers like Jeantel.

I want our first black president to do only one thing: Afford all African-American children the opportunity to speak the same way he does. The clock is ticking on his legacy.

Boobie, can you provide some specific example of policy Obama might have proposed to effect they type of change described in the OP?

Stupid Obama. It's been 5 years, why hasn't he gotten rid of ebonics yet? This is all his fault.

Not a policy wonk so I have no idea, but it seems to me that it wouldn't be that hard to enact changes that would ensure that a high school graduate could at least read her diploma.

Yep, you're not a policy wonk. Though you do appear to be completely naive to the political process and you clearly have not paid attention DC politics the last 5 years. Stick to rooting for Zimmerman where you at least appear to have some vague, although biased, grasp of what you're discussing.

Inner city charter schools have proven to be successful, but the teacher's union fights tooth and nail to prevent them. I imagine Obama is reluctant to take them on over this issue because they've got him deep in their back pocket.

A President with ANY kind of leadership skills could create a groundswell to enact change, but alas, this guy has none.

The problem is predominately in the inner cities. I shouldn't have to scare up any data to prove that.

Who was the last president with ANY kind of leadership skills and why did they chose to do nothing about this issue? You realize this isn't a problem that's sprung up in the last 5 years, right?

If it weren't that hard to do, it would have happened a long, long time ago.

Seriously boobie, stick to the Zimmerman trial. In that regard you just look like a racist. When you stray from that topic, you show yourself to be a complete and total moron.

Obama never really wants to improve people's intelligence and literacy levels because he would lose their votes if people get smarter. his rhetorics could only deceive those people who were either undereducated (like my goddess) or those who were born stupid, and those are the majority of population unfortunately which was why he got elected in the first place

Evidently this writer wants to blame Obama.

for tat imho, even if the writer was actually blaming him. Obama is the biggest blame-card player to ever take office as the US president, and what the writer said was nothing but the plain truth imho. Dude didn't only fail to live up to his promises, he also made things worse, much worse than when he first took office. Despite him being a terrible president, however, he always has the blame-card to play and to shield himself from criticism, and he can always spot the right target to blame no matter it is GWB or China

The writer has unrealistic expectations and I'd bet my left nut he voted for Obama in 2012, even after Obama did jack for the black community in his initial term. He's unhappy with Obama? The line forms to the left.

Saying it's 'not that hard' to fix our public education system, particularly in poor environments, as you did, is incredibly naive and stupid.

Without googling, could you even tell me who's the secretary of education?

That standard doesn't disprove or prove boobie's argument. Can you provide a better metric?
