Problem is, Pop doesn't play up tempo. Still playing the "dump it into Tim" ball. Pop reminds me of Tom Landry. Other teams strategy caught up to him one day but old Tom was asleep...kept using the same old offense and defense. Basically, he hung around too long after the magic had gone.

Even then it went badly whe JJones fired him. But all was soon forgotten with 3 les in 4 yrs Would have been more if egos and pride hadn't gotten in the way.
Spurs like to play uptempo but last year they just couldn't get defensive rebounds causing the guards to stay longer then needed instead of getting out on the break. Non of that has to do with Pop unless you consider him responsible for trusting his bigs to get a rebound every now and then.

Spurs sign point guard Jacque Vaughn, extend offers to centers Elson and Butler

The Spurs moved quickly when the NBA’s free-agent signing period began Wednesday, signing point guard Jacque Vaughn and extending offer sheets to centers Francisco Elson and Jackie Butler.

Elson and Butler are restricted free agents, so Denver and New York have seven days to match the offers. The Knicks have already indicated they want to keep Butler.

The Spurs extended offers to both Elson and Butler in part because they were unable to reach agreement with former second-round pick Robertas Javtokas. Javtokas is preparing to play in Greece, but the Spurs haven’t given up hope they will be able to resume negotiations with him, if needed.

Vaughn, who signed a one-year contract for the league minimum, will compete with Beno Udrih for the

Javtokas' agent Herb Rudoy told News 4 WOAI that the Spurs made offers to New York's Jackie Butler and Denver's Francisco Elson.

Javtokas immediately signed a deal to play with Panathinaikos Greece in the European League. Rudoy told News 4 that Javtokas was "surprised" at the Spurs decision, but that he got a great contract from Panathinaikos.

Seems these are worded a little differently.

Vaughn is a good signing. I don't know what Spurs fans expect for the minimum.

I liked Pargo better, but Vaughn was in my top 5.

Vaughn is a fine signing for a 3rd. To me the question is back-up. Is it going to be Beno? If so, has he been showing the kind of improvement in ball handling to handle pressure? Vaughn will be good for 7 mintues or less, but if Beno is the backup he's gonna have a huge role. Hope he's up for it.

i'd rather have nothing than have this piece of wasting space on the bench with the possibility of coming in ruining a game

Spurs fans are classic. Who else are you going to get with a minimum contract? Maybe Pargo but he probably gets more. Who else?

There's no veteran PG on the market. , there's no young PG on the market.

Vaughn, yeah he's pretty bad but he's as good as you are going to get for the minimum.

Plus he can do the things Beno can't always do ... namely dribble the ball up the court and initiate the offense.

actually this is a good signing by SA. obviously the spurs see something in him, and are confident he can fill the backup PG role. he IS BETTER then GAY-NO udrih, and should do a decent job. i think the spurs still have some tricks up their sleeves and will get another PG,possible in exchange for beno, because i dont see beno staying here.

i don't have a big problem with vaughn but right now he's the biggest pickup in free agency this summer. that's with the lle and mle at their disposal. maybe they'll be able to pick up some young talent like butler and a swing but right now it's a bit underwhelming, especially in light of them getting rid of the two contracts the spurs griped about the most.

dude NVE ruined the game every ing time we played his ass, the entire ing season, and every game he appeared in the playoffs.

He made a decent % of threes, but he was like a tin man out there on d, and he just blatantly blatantly sucked ass

I hope so, because if Vaughn is the backup the back court will be a BIG achilles heel next year. I guess if they keep Barry he can play some backup PG.

Vaughn is the third point guard. This job is Beno's to lose. Bringing in veteran with no upside who will be there in case of emergencies was the right way to go if the Spurs want Beno to try to win the spot.
