Doesn't Chris Martin have a daughter named Pear, or Pomegranate or something like that?
If you think its funny t hen you did not read my original post before the topic got out of hand and about metal and .
I know other bands suck, and alot of other bands suck more, but I don't understand why they are popular when they write a 6 note piano peice, shift it slightly, and play it over and over again behind a song about frolicing in a land of mystical clocks.
I know they are popular but I'm asking why. Katy was the only one who directly responded to the topic at hand: Because Chris Martin is dreamy and plays piano. Another generic response was that it was mellow music, but I wanted more detailed responses.
metal, I just wanted some input from those of you who like this so called band to let me know why you like them.

It's nice to listen to music that isn't 'heavy' all of the time. Coldplay fits that bill in a very melodic and ear-friendly way. There doesn't need to be a big explanation, and nobody short of Clay Aiken fans should have to defend their musical choices.
Well if you want to mellow out why not listen to REM or something like that
I always liked The Verve a little bit more than Coldplay.
Plagiarism acknowledged, The Verve made one of the best pop-rock hits of all time - Bittersweet Symphony.
Why, because REM is on the list of approved bands by CBF?
uh oh, I liked clocks, I guess that makes me a chode
I hate that The Verve split up, I love them. Remember when Richard Ashcroft sang Bittersweet Symphony with Coldplay at Live 8? Yeah, it was awesome.
They were alright... I think people would have a different opinion of them if they hadn't gotten so mainstream there for a while.
I never got into them all that much, but they were a breath of fresh air considering what was popular in Alternative music at the time.
When I hear that song, I think of Cruel Intentions.

props to lamarcus bryant for knowing a band when he sees one
they hit big with Yellow, so now everyone thinks they are amazing. Just shows what one big song can do
It's interesting, though, that we were all talking about them as if their time had passed, and then a year later "Viva la Vida" comes out and they're selling out huge arenas.
Shows you that 15 year old girls will listen to anything.
The song they ripped off?
Coldplay is a good band.
I won't argue for their lyrics. But they obviously have a good handle on how to make great sound. Their guitar tone is never dry, (although that's not necessarily a bad thing), they have interesting motifs in their songs, and they're quite catchy.
Their ways of harmonizing chords is pleasant, and for the most part chris martin knows how to voice lead on piano, so it doesn't sound cheap like some rock piano. He has a knack for resolving the end of his phrases.
To say that Coldplay is overrated because the piano parts are simple, one would have to say the same thing about john lennon's "imagine". Pop music in general, and that includes alot of speed metal too, don't have intricate harmonic progressions.
Unless the specific music you listened to modulates more than three times to a different tonal center, has a transposition, and many sequences like a classical sonata, or even just a bunch of alternating ii-V-I's in order of minor thirds like Giant steps for bebop, then you really don't stand out more than anyone.
Alot of music is just Do-ti anyway.

coldplay isn't very technically advanced music. this is the best song imo
coldplay did luck out because they snuck in on the final days of the tv music video, when people SEE that piano and the british look AND the pale skin, they knew this couldnt be pop and they should have no guilt buying their CD
Coldplay should be drawn and quartered
Who's more flimsy:
Coldplay, Kings of Leon or Incubus?
Kings and Incubus are both bad azz. Coldplay is solid to listen to, but Kings are it.
