News 4 WOAI has uncovered new information regarding the two babies found dead underneath a South Side home.
A letter was sent to family members after the children's deaths, essentially closing the child abuse investigation for lack of evidence. The letter infuriated family members who spoke to De Leon.
Two days after Sariya and Sebastian were found dead underneath the triplex on Winnipeg, a letter arrived at the home of family members of the children. The letter shows Child Protective Services closed its investigation into the children's mother, Valerie Lopez.
The letter says "The report on your family has been investigated, and there was not sufficient information to determine if abuse or neglect occurred, and we will not be providing further services."
The children's great-grandmother says CPS didn't do its job. She says first called police in November and that is when the case was turned over to CPS.
She says right before the babies' bodies were discovered, she got a phone call that the case was going to be dropped.
"The case worker, he called me at night," says Sylvia Garcia. "After two days, at the most, three days before the babies were found, 'we're closing. I'm just calling because we're closing the case on the Valerie thing.' I said, 'what?'"
Sylvia says she couldn't believe CPS was closing the case. "He says, 'you know, because we can't find them.' I asked him if he could leave it open, 'even if you don't go look for them. Leave it open. Just in something comes up.' He says, 'No, we can't do that.'"
A representative from CPS says she cannot comment on confidential information from a case file. In the meantime, family members say they are looking to hire an attorney.
Funeral plans for both children are still in the works. The memorials and funerals are being handled by Mission Park Funeral Home.
The case is being closed? What the ? How come the other family members didn't do something earlier since they had the time to videotape a baby with bruises? I have a problem with putting the entire blame on CPS, a true family would know something was up when they haven't seen someone's kid since Christmas.
Sadly, I think this happens a lot with CPS. And I agree about the family.
There were pictures of the baby with bruises on the front page today.
This is just ing sad. They had video of a ing infant with bruises and they don't say until AFTER the baby is dead? They have blood on their hands too. Maybe if CPS had that video as evidence BEFORE the murders, those kids would still be alive. Morons.
It's this kind of that makes me think having to get a license to be a parent would be a good idea.
There are just a lot of stupid people in this world.
I just found out I'm related to one of the investigators assigned to the case the day after the children's bodies were found.
