    Spurs release guard White
    Johnny Ludden
    Express-News

The Spurs waived guard James White on Monday in a move that saves the team $100,000.

The move was expected after White failed to impress team officials during the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas. His contract guaranteed him $100,000 if he was on the roster Aug. 1 and another $100,000 if he was still on the team at the start of training camp.

While White is exceptionally athletic and famed for his dunking ability, he apparently lacked the physicality the Spurs sought.

The Spurs now have 13 players under contract, though guard Vassilis Spanoulis is expected to ask for his release so he can play in Europe next season.

Does this mean that he still hasn't asked for it?

Damn, it sucks that White lacked the "physicality" of a Barry or Udrih. Man, next time come up with something more believable.

The Spurs will get Spannilousous to go away, so they'll have 12 under contract. Then they will sign Marcus Williams to a minimum rookie deal. Then they will pick up a cheap big for the minimum and carry 14 into next season.

Yeah, since when did physicality become a prerequisite for a Spurs swingman? The only swingman that is slightly physical is Manu ... and he's more crafty than physical.

Why can't Ludden just write that the Spurs don't want to pay double his minimum salary?

    Exactly.

The cheap big will likely be Mahinmi. Going with 14 players, the Spurs can avoid the Lux Tax Monster.

lacked the physicality. Speaking about being physical it's what Butler obviously has but too much of it...

I don't know but I'm getting confused already

Mmmmm. Of all the moves this summer, dropping Jackie was the worst I think. I bet he goes on to be a very solid starting centre somewhere.

Who would have thought when offseason began that Butler and white, aka "spurs future" would be gone ? I don't think many would have bet on that.

I think we can assume now that Mahinmi is in, unless the FO would surprise everybody with one or two other unexepected signings...

I think it's clear now that they're more concerned by the present than the far future and want to get the more they can in the Duncan era.

After all, TP is still young and progressing, they have a intriguing bigs in Ian and Tiago and could sign one or two solid free agents by next year.
They could also make significant moves next february like they sometimes do.

I don't think Butler and White leavings are cons uting a major importance in thisoffseason, much less anyway than Scola's trade to Houston (would you be pro or anti).

The longer things progress it looks like Beno might actually spend next season with the team. Personally, I'd rather dump Beno and simply keep Spanoulis (assuming hes willing). I remember what Spanoulis did in the world championships and I wouldn't mind seeing how he does in our system. And in the same regard, somebody might get a quality product in Beno if their system meshes with him better.

    Parker/Spanoulis/Vaughn
    Ginobili/Finley/Barry
    Bowen/Udoka/Williams
    Duncan/Horry/Bonner
    Oberto/Elson/Mahinmi

In fairness to the Spurs, they were trying to harness his athleticism and make him a real defender, no?

I'm sorry I missed all five pages. Who do you guys have for the next savior for the Spurs? I mean according to you guys this guy was going to be a major contributor off the bench and win the next dunk contest while probably going for the sixth man award. For the ignorant that was sarcasm.

If they do in fact sign Ian do we really need to hear all year long how he will be the next great thing off the Spurs bench.....you know when he FULLY develops and gets past the SJax plan.

and in fairness to White, he couldn't harness the defensive concept or shoot a lick, no?

The guy just didn't have a basketball mind at all or at least a Spur mind. He had plenty of time to grasp the Spurs concept yet he'd stand on the perimeter, wave off screens, dribble the ball for 10 seconds then make a sad ill-advised pass as the buzzer was sounding or a wild shot. Who does he think he is? Tracy Mcgrady or Steve Francis? (damn it gonna be sad seeing those on the floor together this year--I almost forgot ) Does that sound like Spur basketball to you? Only our franchise players are allowed to call for the ball, even then it's within an offensive set.

The guy was bad and if he's so good then he let inferior players outplay him for that spot. Marcus Williams looks TEN times worse, but I really don't think he'll make it...or play (at least I hope).

the dunk contest. This guy was a raw, yet promising young player. The goal wasn't for him to crack the rotation come November. He was supposed to have been a long-term answer at the swing spot. Even though he's only 25 years old and hasn't had a lot of opportunity to play, there wasn't going to be that dramatic of an improvement in his game since May.

I'm simply disappointed that they didn't at least allow him at least another season of physical strengthening and development. Everyone claimed how hard the kid was working and how he was buying into the system. If that's all true, that makes his release all the more puzzling. I find it hard to believe that the Spurs saw nothing redeeming in his talent, at ude and abilities that would make them was to invest more time in him. Especially since they had apparently targeted him in the '06 draft. Besides all that, can he be any worse than the Williams kid they just drafted?

At what point are the Spurs going to get a young, talented player in here and let him develop so that he can eventually become a major contributor to the rotation? It's a proven fact that it's easier and more cost-effective to develop your own talent through the draft rather than to overpay to acquire someone else's talent.

Or are the Spurs content on continuing in the mode of bringing in older veterans to plug holes and play for cheap? Maybe the Spurs are just sour on young domestic prospects alltogether.
