At this point, however well you can stock the team for the next two seasons, you do it.
If Spurs can find a way to be good at SF without spending $35M or $40M on a player who struggled to fit with the team, you do it.

Josh Howard with Matt Barnes as back up is a good SF rotation.

Bonner must have laid down the law on Pop about Splitter . . .

I'm not sure if this was by design or not, but a 3yr/$10 mil contract lines up exactly with rookie scale for the #4 pick in this year's draft. Just an observation........
That would be a nice contract to Splitter when he was a great prospect at 21 years old. He would fit preety well in a #4 pick 4 years ago.

Right now, this contract has just 1 winner and it was

Spurs still need 6th big, so I guess LLE or vet min would go to get that.

yeah I believe Woj, but I don't want Raja Bell, he is 6'5 and too much of a Bogans, Udoka type
Bell is about as far from those two in one direction as he is from Kobe in the other. He is SO much better on both sides of the ball than those two it's ridiculous. He has 6 seasons over 40% on three pointers, and is a high volume long ball shooter, in addtion to his high percentage.. He's no longer a lock down defender, but he's WAY better than Udoka or Bogans.

Bell can shoot way better and play better defense. At least in the past he could.

I wouldn't be so sure about the Spurs adding another big - but if they do, it will likely be Richards (who will likely spend the full season in the D-League).

I can see the Spurs' pitch.

Pop: Tiago, we want to give you $35M. , we'll make it closer to $40M. You just take that little pen there and sign a 5-year deal.

Tiago: No, uh, but I know I want to only have three-year contract.

Pop: are you telling me you don't want $35M?

Tiago: No ... [/Pop cuts him off mid-sentence]

Pop: He doesn't!?! Wow ... what a team player. I bet the next thing out of your mouth was that you don't feel you deserve to be paid more than your close friend Luis was when he came over. You don't want any resentment or to feel like you've been handed anything, Right?

Tiago: Well ... [/Pop cuts him off again]

Pop: Well, you heard it folks. This great player and man is going to do the honorable thing and take a deal that's below his market value and one that falls in line with his close friend, Luis Scola!

Tiago: But ... [/Pop cuts him off again]

Pop: Now, Tiago, I know what you're going to say but I'm perfectly willing to help you out; I know English isn't your first language and all. Tiago. [/Pop calls out to Splitter]

Tiago:Yes ... [Pop cuts him off again -- mutters to RC: "You got that 'yes,' right?" RC nods he did; Pop confers with RC]

Pop: you just give me a minute and we'll wrap this thing up, alright, Tiago?

Tiago: I wa.... [/Pop cuts him off again]

Pop: You want to reiterate how pleased you are to be in San Antonio and with the Spurs; see I told you I'd help you with the language -- you would've had with that 'reiterate' word. Give me a sec, guys. [/Pop and RC leave the room]

Pop to RC: Alright, now just take the 'yes' we got recorded and insert it after the Scola bull and how I mentioned he'd want to be compensated fairly and in lines with his friend, Luis.

    RC: Is this even ethical?

Pop: I can go back to GM duties, Buford.

RC: Seems on the up and up to me.

Bell or not, if this report is true, then Tiago is really doing the Spurs a favor and giving them some much needed flexibility this summer. I think it was pretty much assumed that he would demand the full MLE or most of it. This definitely makes the FA outlook more interesting.
A favor? He made them wait 2 years after he said he was going to come in 2008, and is the highest paid #28 pick in the history of the draft. His first year salary is more than 3X scale.

I cannot believe Tiago is making less than *Bonner, Gooden, Petro, Amir, Frye and Warrick.

He is only making about 1.4M more than Ian if this is true.

    So 2.6 left basically. Awesome.
If it's $3.4 million exactly, then they have $2.365 million left.

This is a smart move keeping it short term like this. In three years he will be 28 and could be looking at some Varejao/Haywood type contract.

Reports are contradicting about Ian and it's possible that he is only paid a min salary (about $900K).

Hmmm ... now the Spurs might have to decide between giving Richards a three-year deal or going after a player who otherwise is getting offered the LLE.

What are you talking about? Splitter never asked to be picked in the late first round of the draft. He was just automatic elegible.
HeŽd be only interessed in joining the NBA if he was a Top pick.

So, it was not like "he made" Spurs wait for 2 years, even because Spurs always had the trade option.
