A review of the Spurs' total team payroll rankings over the last few seasons.

    2004-05.....#24 (7th lowest)
    2003-04.....#25 (5th lowest)
    2002-03.....#17 (13th lowest)
    2001-02.....#24 (6th lowest)
    2000-01......#8 (22nd lowest) - AJ's thank you salary
    1999-00......#16 (14th lowest)

    source

So there you go. Only once in the last 6 seasons (incl this one) have the Spurs been in the top half and that was due to an extraordinary cir stance.

Parker's 8+ million and add the MLE and you're looking at up to $12 - 13 million on top of $45 million. pre-Parker That's going to put them in the upper half and with long term commitments the CBA could well put them in the elite eschelon of salaries in outlying years. Arguing cheapness is a lame argument.

They've been cheap and will continue to be cheap. They are not the only team that will have players hitting their extension contracts next season. They won't be the only team signing players using cap exceptions. They won't be the only team signing free agents.

If they aren't so cheap why the did they need that arena deal? that. If they want a handout then they better pay up when it comes to player salaries.

Charlie Parker is a nut and needs to check his sources better...I guess.
Why are you blaming Charlie Parker -- it was a Utah broadcaster who claimed his "sources" said it was true.

What are Spurs ticket prices compared to other franchises? How is their cable deal compared to other franchises?

They get the same cut off the national deals save for that slight former ABA team discount. Think they aren't doing a little better with the merchandise in certain parts of the globe?

They aren't hurting and their ticket prices sure as don't seem to be that cheap.

I agree with Marcus. It is time for the Spurs to pay up. They've been frugal for years. Well, they can be less frugal for a few years considering the arena deal, ticket prices, etc etc etc. Depth will improve their chances of winning championships and in the end, will make them more money anyway.

Keep Malik unless you improve the team on the court. Quit trying to trade his ing contract. You gave it to him and when he plays consistently, he produces.

Go around to other NBA teams arenas and youll find out your way wrong.

Worse seats for the Magic, than my seats at the SBC Center, and they were easily 20 bucks more.

The Spurs seats are cheap for the venue, and the type of team put out there.

Lest we forget that Holt Cat led the push for the new CBA back in '98 that led to the lockout and ultimately the new CBA with maximum player contracts and the luxury tax in the first place. That alone cost Duncan probably about half of his future NBA earnings from that point forward.

They've enjoyed the benefits of having a starting point guard for the price of a 4 year rookie contract at the lowest possible price for a 1st round pick. They also enjoyed having Manu for peanuts for the last couple of seasons.

    "Cheap"? yeah.

I don't no the ins and outs of local broadcast deals but I've read the Maloof's complaining about not getting a local deal in Sac with Comcast as a reason they have to cut payroll. If I'm wrong and it has no impact educate me.

That proves the Spurs management team of coaches and FO is the best of the league. They've been onistently in the hunt and won two championships without surrendering to the megabucks philosophy.

And in the process have brought a good bunch of guys to town that we can identify with as people. I don't know of another town that can say they have as close a personal relationship between their team and the fans.

    A GREAT FRANCHISE!

Why don't you work for half then?

Look, they've had plenty of breaks over the last 5 to 7 years. There is no reason for them to get cheap now. Used to be their excuse was that the CBA rules favored large markets. Enter the new CBA. Used to be their excuse was that it was hard for them to get young talent since they were always drafting so low. So much for that. Used to be their excuse was that they didn't have the arena revenues that other franchises enjoyed because of the dearth of luxury suites at the 'dome as well as control over other arena revenues. Enter the SBC Center.

No excuses. It's time for them to pay up to give this team its best chance to win championships.

And the point is they're not.

They've committed money and now secured a core of players that should see them as contenders for the next 4 -5 years, lack of injuries willing. They are very likely now in the upper half of league salaries drawing quite possibly from a smaller monetary base when all factors are taken into account. In fact now fully loaded, if a player adverse CBA comes into place they may well be a financially disadvantaeged franchise in the not to distant fututre.

Then why have they been trying to move Malik Rose because of his contract and his contract alone for the past two years? Again and again all I see reported is that they supposedly cannot afford that contract. Yeah right.

    1. Every business has a bottomline. Even Paul Allen who's richer than God is tired of paying therough the nose.

    2. Malik doesn't appear to be seen in the Spur's future with Pop wanting/liking different palyers. I'lll bet even Malik would rather be traded and get playing time rather than sit on the bench behind Scola or whoever. That's Pop's call and he seems o have some vague clue about what he's doing.

    1. As long as they depend on public subsidies to help them make money then their business is an open book as far as I am concerned. Also, as a paying customer I think I should be able to criticize what they put out there on the court.

Virtual every business involves public subsidies in one form or another.

Do you or have you ever run or been responsible for the financial health of a business?

Direct subsidies not general ones picnroll. They own all revenues coming from that facility.

How about the massive tax subsidies/abatements granted the Toyota plant or the proposed PGA village?

Plant/golf course, jobs would go elsewhere, as would the Spurs.
