not about ethics. you just make it harder for your team to execute a trade, potentially keeping you locked there longer than you want to be.
now that teams know that the pressure to trade him is absolute, they dont have to give the same quality of offers they otherwise would have, and the pels are less likely to pull a quick trigger. will likely wait until the summer or even next year's deadline. but had he just told them privately, and pels took the initiative to make calls, i think a trade would happen much more quickly

The Spurs got Frank Brickowski for Mychal Thompson. It was a really good deal for them considering how a player Thompson was when he was the focal point of the offense. Look up that 's stats when he was on the Spurs, he was basically Olowokandi minus the size.
I don't think it makes much of a difference myself. If the Pelicans are making Davis available then everyone knows he told them he wasn't going to sign the extension. The fact that Davis just says he wants to go to a contender probably shouldn't depress his value as much as Kawhi sitting out a season and saying LA or bust.
