I feel like Keldon would also suck at the 3 position.
Not to mention that Suns have Bridges, Jazz Bogdanovic and Warriors Wiggins starting at the other forward position.
All of them way stronger and more physical than Mcdermott or whoever else Pop throws out there.
I feel like Keldon would also suck at the 3 position.
As much as I like Keldon, he’s a tweener, too short for a PF and too slow laterally for a SF. Spurs should capitalize on his Olympic Gold popularity, rookie contract and cash out, include in a trade package to get a Grant, Sabonis, Simmons or Turner.
I mean if Cam Reddish was that good, there wouldn't be all these reports that say he is available for trade...
And not very many teams play guys like Myles Turner at the 4, because there are not very many Myles Turners in the league. Not very many guys his size who can shoot 3's at a decent volume and make them at a decent volume WHILE also been an upper tier rim protector. You see so many wing sized 4's because there just isn't any other option vs teams specifically playing that way. Either way the spurs have proved to be very bad at this. We were not a good team when we had Demar doing it. We are not a good team now that we have keldon doing it, and we won't be a good team if we somehow get cam reddish to do it.
A young Rudy Gay could be a good 4. A young Rudy Gay was also a fringe all star level player. So I mean yeah if you can put a 6 "8" guy at the 4 who is a near all star caliber player it is going to work. But you put a 6 "8" guy with fringe all star talent anywhere on the floor and it is going to work...so...
If Zach Collins can come back and just make open 3's while somewhat protecting the rim and rebounding at the 4 position, we will be a much better team than we are now with Keldon playing the 4. I assumed this is why we signed Collins in the first place.
When you have Chris Paul, Devin Booker, and Deandre Ayton, you can get away with putting anybody at the 4...
When you have Rudy Gobert, the multi time DPOY, you can put anybody next to him at the 4...until the playoffs...
When you have a former DPOY and one of the most versatile defenders in nba history, you can put him at the 4 and it be great for your defense...
You think if we traded for Royce O Neal and played him at the 4 we would all of a sudden start winning games and Utah would all of a sudden start losing them? I don't.
The contract Hayward got is 4 yrs at $30M per, tho. All $120M is guaranteed, and he has a 15% trade kicker. Not many SFs are paid more, and the ones who are, have names like Kevin Durant, LeBron James, Jimmy Butler…
Statistically, over their careers, McDermott is the better shooter, but of course Hayward is easily the more complete player. No question about that. However, you have to pay for it.
Could this Spurs team, as it stands, make good use of Hayward, at that price? I have to doubt it. The Spurs are still last in the league in 3pt attempts, for one thing. Relative to most of the NBA, the Spurs’ offense is broken.
Our offense isn't broken. We just have zero players who can run it. This is the dummied version of the offense Pop wants to run. For all the talk about the beautiful game, people don't understand that a huge huge part of that offense relied on both Tony and Manu to beat their man off the dribble to initiate a lot of it. We don't have that player.
Now does Gordon Hayward solve that problem? Nope. Not at all. But he does compliment DJ a lot better than Doug in the sense that he can initiate it himself for a little bit and unlike every other player who DJ passes the ball to, Gordon actually knows what to do when he drives the ball. He isn't a bull in the China shop like Keldon. He can get in the teeth of the D unlike Lonnie. He is bigger and stronger than Derrick. He can finish at the hoop with a variety of moves that Devin just doesn't have. And he can create his own shot and for others. Doug can't do that at all.
The offense would look a lot more fluid I believe with a player like Gordon.
Could Pop send him down to G League to work on things and get over himself?
Pops won 5 les and an Olympic gold you know.
Like I said, terrible defense. No reason he should be stretching his body vertical when Hayward isn’t even rising up. If he stayed low to the ground, he wouldn’t get pushed off like that. Awful defensive principles.
Hold on whoa, whoa...
The bad defense came much earlier.
The crossover had him on his heels and then running for Hayward.
It was over then. This is just horrible footwork very early.
Hayward ramming him back is easy because he is running to get to a spot he cant possible make a stand at. The bump and swipe is useless, the play is already over.
