vaugh has one of the worst jumpers in the world makes bowen look like wilt
This is a joke right, Jacque Vaughn is gotta be on of the worst shooters in the league. Teams dont even guard him, they sag off of him and will let him shoot all day
vaugh has one of the worst jumpers in the world makes bowen look like wilt
just like they did carter they'll cut vaughn
vaughn is a good cheap option for that third point guard.
takes care of one of the offseason goals.
I guess he won't give up 3 or 4 and-1s in like 5 minutes like Van Exel did in game 3 or 4 against Dallas one time. Van Exel guarding Devin Harris was painful to watch.
This was a solid pickup for the Spurs.
I believe expectations were a little too high by many fans regarding a PG signing. Too many people were looking for a homerun when all you really need is a base hit. The Spurs did not need or want a Speedy Claxton ... unless someone like that fell in their lap. This is Beno's 3rd year, and this is his time. His chance is here and now.
I was actually dissapointed that Beno only got 10 minutes per last year. I realize that a 'name' like NVE perhaps garners the larger piece of the pie, but I'm all for developing the youth ... the future. NVE was signed for the playoffs. Nothing more nothing less. And he didn't do a whole lot in that regard IMO. Beno will hopefully be around for years. Give him the chance.
In the little that I've seen from Beno, I've been somewhat impressed. I think he can be a pretty good player. Is he a star? no. but as a backup, I think he's a nice piece.
Vaughn is a gritty defender. I envision him filling a role somewhat like Lindsey Hunter for the Pistons. He'll come in and harras the opposition ... though he doesn't have the knack of getting as many steals, he does a good job of applying pressure. Look for the Spurs to employ more backcourt traps with him in the game. He's also good at running the offense. He'll do a better job of actually creating shots for others w/ timely passes. I look forward to seein him on the floor w/ Manu and TD. TP doesn't do a terrifice job of really creating for others. POP tells him to shoot and penetrate. Meanwhile Manu looks on with disbelief that the ball isn't passed to him when he beats his man or has a great matchup. This is where a guy like Vaughn comes in.
He isn't a shooter. Never has been, never will be. But he is a pretty good free throw shooter.
I like his passing ability. He makes good passes ... but more importantly, he doesn't make that many bad passes. In that regard, he may be better than Parker, Beno and NVE. He's a smart player that doesn't try to do too much with the ball. There's a fine line between being aggressive, and forcing things. He's found the balance. He will not be like NVE was this year making a lot of stupid mistakes. He will not be a high turnover guy.
And something else that I didn't see anyone else mention, is his mentoring and leadership role in helping Beno develop. He's a guy who's had to scrap and fight for his job in the League. He has a great respect for the dedication and focus needed to stay on a team and in the L. Something that I don't think NVE could teach him.
So far Beno has looked up to Parker, who while being a good player, may not be the ideal candidate to mentor a new player who happens to be the same age. NVE has always been one of the top options in his respective teams. Beno will never be that. Vaughn's career and experiences parallel Benos much better.
And that sorta ties into something else. Confidence. How happy do you think Beno was last year when he saw the team sign NVE? He knew he would be regulated to nothing more than 'Darko' minutes. That had to hurt him a little bit. Especially in light of his solid play in the playoffs the previous year. If memory serves me, he was playing rather well until the finals. Perhaps I'm mistaken, and I'm sure you all know better than I. But I thought he did good in the other series.
Right now, PoP is telling Beno that he is the #2 man. That they are going to need and depend on him. That wasn't really the case last year with NVE in the mix. I think he'll come in and be ready to contribute.
This is exactly what the Spurs needed. Someone who can bring 5-15 minutes a night. His defense is very good. While not flashy, he can handle the rock well. He has above average quickness and isn't prone to alot of mental mistakes.
And the best part is that it didn't cost but the vet minimum.
Vaughn? Ridiculous. Who's place is he taking? Are they getting rid of Beno to make room for this Vaughn?
I tend to agree with another poster I saw today that said SAS is heading down a very dark path this year.
Championship in June 2007??? Yea, if the Sun comes up in the West and sets in the North, I'll agree with you.
I think there is a distinct possibility SAS won't even make the playoffs at the rate they're going right now.
But in the end, what with the war stuff, financial collapse looming, who the heck cares about this stuff?????? Who cares about these basketball s? Who really cares which of these teams do anything, anything at all.
What is with people on july 12?
Vaughn being a good defender is key, especially against the Mavs. You might even see some Vaughn/Parker lineups if the Mavs keep going with Terry and Harris.
Jacque Vaughn
Clearly Parker begged Pop for a French running mate.
I know what you're trying to say, but boy, wrong example!
And people asking why Beno didn't get playoff PT must have been off taking a whiz when he was bringing the ball up under any kind of pressure.
Thinking about it, I like Vaughn.
Now we have a backup PG who can shoot the lights out and another to play tough D who won't turn the ball over - versatility for the vet min.
Makes sense to me.
Maybe that is what he as going to put if we don't get butler... for the starting center position.
Oh, and in response to this can I just say...

Tommorow I am going to wake up and this will all be a bad dream! A REALLY REALLY BAD DREAM, THE WORST!!!!
Vaughn is fine.
I like his defense because he is rather stocky and strong, doesn't get bullied.
Not bad for the minimum.
Coulda been worse.
He can guard and can bring the rock up. Good on the cheap.
Strongly disagree, PG is a strong spot for Spurs. We have :
- Tony Parker, an 24 years old all star who is a top5 PG in the league, who can play 34mpg for 80 games/season.
- Beno Udrih who is a very talented PG. Don't forget his rookie year, this guy has the upside to be a starting PG. He is still a question mark concerning certains points like his confidence and his ballhandling.
- Jacque Vaughn who is a solid vet PG. He isn't a talented player but he has a lot of experience and he is not that old. He was good enough to be the main backup for a playoff team last year. He is the perfect emergency guy if Beno struggles because his main qualities (ballhandling and defense) are Beno's main weaknesses.
Riiight. From a franchise record # of wins, to suddenly not making the playoffs because they lost Rasho and Nazr Mohammed. Pass that doobie over here.
Signing Vaughn is not the problem. If Javtokas or Pryzbilla or Zo were coming, everyone would be talking about what a great pickup this was.
That´ll shut this fool up if he has any sense of well-being and self-respect. 3 rings. 4th on its way. Your team gots NONE and will NOT get lucky again against the Spurs next year. Ya lost...in UGLY fashion in the freaking Finals!
I'd say "good point", except what were the alternatives?
Except he doesn't. Typically, people cite three games as examples of why he sucks so bad, but he's played in a of a lot more than three games. Pop went through Manu's turnovers and Parker's bad decisions when they were young players and he showed some confidence in them by putting them back in the game. He hasn't done that with Beno.
What, you want a list? The alternatives were signing a vet who was clearly superior to Beno or a young player who had the potential to really compete for the backup spot.I was surprised more teams didn't lock in on the fact that Beno drops his purse under pressure like they did with Jason Hart when he played here. When teams did however, the result was pretty damning for Beno. There is no doubt he would've seen much more pressing in the playoffs and Pop decided he didn't need to go through that again.Except he doesn't.
