Hopefully more dunks and less rimed hook shots.. Like the reverse poster if Lebron was a second late that dunk would have been lethal, he needs to power those down all next season.

One way to look at this was at Splitter's peak this season, I was hoping the Spurs could convince him to stay for 4 years and $40 million. I was worried he'd go somewhere else for more. So getting him for 4 years and $36 million means he lost money during the second half of the season.

Sure he has his warts and weaknesses but all in all Splitter is a proven fit who probably hasn't peaked. The Spurs get his prime basketball years (centers like him usually peak between 28-31) for a standard starting bigman price.

How does this affect giving Kawhi a future extension? Some journalists on Twitter keep bringing up Kawhi.
Spurs realize there's no way they can keep Kawhi long-term. He'll be a max contract sort of player.

I'm assuming they won't sign this until after they ink their free agents...

Also, that 4th year makes it a pretty big contract (assuming it's guaranteed). Even if it was 3 years, that is more than ASIK got. It's fair based on the NBA market value, but 36M is a lot for someone his age, with his injury problems and that you can only play 25MPG and have to sit during the finals for long stretches (not to mention, someone who can't really get you a double double). It will very likely make him the 3rd highest paid player on the Spurs this year and he will only be playing limited minutes with limited offensive production.

Having said that, I am very glad he is back. Spurs aren't the normal team with regards to stats for production and he plays a big enough role. Also, major props to the Spurs for overpaying (to what degree we can argue) in order to make the commitment to be a contender as long as Tim/TP/Manu are around. That's a big deal and congrats to Splitter for his first big contract.

Now re-sign Manu and go all out for AK47. We won't get the shot creator that we need but hopefully Splitter improves and Kirilenko would step up and have a good year. Our best shot at this point.
Good points. We need AK47. But does mean we will not get a better version of Gary Neal which is needed.

I don't think even Rasho would have been blocked by every member of the Miami Heat the way Tiago was.
Rasho also couldn't have defended the pick and roll the way Tiago does.

Think of what the market for big men with some skills is today---and what it will be five years from now.

Meantime, a contract at that figure for that long is probably bankable for a possible trade in case one of the miracle trades that many folks float on this website ever becomes more than their private fantasy.
    Exactly!

When you have spares like Desgana Diop and Samuel Dalembert pulling down some heavy scratch, this deal is fair market value for Splitter.

Believe it or not, Tiago does have market value. His role with the Spurs certainly was not to score the way it would be with an Al Jefferson type of Big. His screening and passing has greater value than people realize. He played in more games than any other Spur this year.

With that said, the Spurs could include his contract in a trade in the not too distant future.

It's fair Market value I suppose but to me its a bit much for a 7 footer that can be posted up by point guards. I honestly dont think I have ever seen a NBA big get blocked as much as Splitter does. I hope he improves dramatically this summer but I feel he is as good as he is going to get.

As to the Rasho comparisons, I think they are off. Splitter is more mobile and and a better offensive player/passer. He really needs to work on his rebounding though. It's horrendous.

Rasho was an iceberg and his touch was pure brick. He was basically just a 7 footer who could occuply space.

Like I've been saying. It's a fair contract when looking at the NBA market value but I'm not going to enjoy seeing Splitter get all this coin. He definitely doesn't deserve it IMO. But it is what it is and I'm glad he's back.

I don't care what anyone says. Tiago Splitter ing sucks. Pop realized that too, and after game 5 he BENCHED HIS ASS. As he should have done ALL ALONG.

Splitter doesn't block shots. He doesn't rebound with any consistency at all, and he's scared to DEATH to post up.

This is the worst contract the Spurs have ever dished out. I am sick to my stomach right now.

Can one of the cap guru tell me how does this affect Kawhi? He's on his third year, and I believe he will be due an extension soon

Why not both? Room exception can be in play for him, no?
Because oden is a bum and hasn't played in over 4 years? The spurs have baynes, let oden be someone else's problem.

I'd have preferred 3 years, but it's not a big deal and the money is both expected and irrelevant, considering their current and future cap situation.

I know a lot of you can't fathom how someone as soft as him, who only does one thing exceptionally well (and even that is reliant on having an elite pick-and-roll ball handler), could get this much, but here's some comparable examples: Ilyasova = $8M, Anderson and Asik = $8+M, Gibson = $8.5M, Jordan and McGee = $11M . . . like it or not, this is exactly where he fits in.
