"The San Antonio Spurs quickly grabbed free agent Jacque Vaughn with a veteran's minimum contract of $1.07 million, a cost-effective move to fill their third-string point guard position. And by midafternoon, the Spurs also signed Knicks third-string center Jackie Butler -- a restricted free agent -- to a surprisingly large offer sheet valued at three years and $7 million, which will be hard for even the Knicks to match, since they're paying $13.5 million to their other two centers next season alone." Newark Star-Ledger

He is what he is. A third string point guard which indicates Beno is going to get primo minutes as the backup point. They will let it run its course at least to the end of the year and reevaluate if needed for the playoff run.

Interesting that the Newark Star-Ledger doesn't see the Knicks matching.

A big part of our success in the 2005 regular season was the Devin Brown/Beno Udrih duo. In the middle of the season, they were ripping up opposing benches. For a while we were on pace to set some record for most 10+ blowout victories, and their effective assault was part of it.

What, you want a list? The alternatives were signing a vet who was clearly superior to Beno or a young player who had the potential to really compete for the backup spot.
My point was that there aren't really players available who fit that description, so it's not clearly choice over necessity that drove the decision.

So you do want a list.

    Marcus Banks
    Tony Delk
    Chucky Atkins

Those are the vets. As for the young guys -- look around. They're out there. You don't have to go much farther than summer league.

Vaughn did a good job in backing Kidd up last year, and played well off the bench.

A good pusher for Beno to try and pull his dumb head out of his scared ass.

Okay. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree, then. My point still stands, but I hope you're right.

And hopefully some compe ion will improve both of them.

I hope Beno doesn't drop his purse.
He needs to take advantage of his opportunities, becuase they could dry up quick.

bump - let's see who was on the JV bandwagon before the season. As usual, Walton buys me off was a dumbass while Solid D had a pretty accurate take.

Vaughn being a good defender is key, especially against the Mavs. You might even see some Vaughn/Parker lineups if the Mavs keep going with Terry and Harris.
