So Porzingis has to actual qualify for the Durant exception in order for him to be missing out on it. In that same way, Anthony Davis didn't really get more by extending with NO outside of the higher annual raises. He ended up not qualifying for the Rose-max. Kristaps would get more in that same way, but until he makes All-NBA teams or grabs some starting All-Star spots, he's not more than a regular max player whose team has Bird rights. The same is true of Cousins, I believe.

The general idea is true that most true star players probably aren't going to be hitting the market until their 12th-15th seasons.
Wow, thanks for that. I hadn't looked at that bit at all yet.

So, the AS voting is going to play a part in determining who are the super-highly compensated players? Any time there is a lot of money on the line, my radar starts looking for manipulation. Whether by league, teams, players, or all of the above. At the very least, I guess we can expect to see more players campaigning like 'Melo this year.

The Knicks could re-hire Isaiah Thomas as GM. It could happen.

Not a surprise. He plays in blowouts, the Spurs haven't gotten blown out, so they're winning those games already. Also they haven't lost many games to begin with.
    Doesn't fit with the record.

In full context, it has little to do with blowouts.

    I'll repost from another thread:

Only 2 of his 14 games of scoring games are from blowouts where he scored in the 4th of blowouts & didn't play in the 1st half, @GSW & vs TOR

Another 2 games had him play in the first half of compe ive games but not score until the fourth and garbage time, vs. NOP, vs. BRK

1 game had him play in the first half, but not score until the fourth of a compe ive game, vs. BOS, scoring when the Spurs were +7.

But he has 9 games where he played and scored in the first half of games, and the leads/deficits when he first scored were +0, +3, -4, -2, -14 @ Boston, -1, -10 @ MIL, -1, & -5

Contrary to conventional wisdom, he doesn't put up points in garage time.

Well don't pat me on the back too much. At best there's ambiguity over whether the player needs to be an All-Star starter or just make the team for the Durant-max. For the Rose-max, they definitely need to be a starter, and I'd imagine it would be the case with Durant-maxes, given the aforementioned change to voting. However, the most recent article about this I found on Google said this:

This CBA offers new incentive to superstars to stay home rather than fleeing during free agency, via what’s informally called the “Kevin Durant Rule,” which allows teams to offer sweeter deals to their franchise players so long as those players meet a set of extremely specific criteria. To reap the benefits of the Durant Rule, a player must have been in the league for eight or nine seasons in the league, and must be re-signing with the team that inked their rookie contract or took on that contract via trade. He must also satisfy one of the following conditions:

Make an All-NBA team the preceding season or two of the last three seasons
Win the MVP in the last three years
Win Defensive Player of the Year in the last three years
    http://deadspin.com/the-nbas-new-kev...ung-1790338477

So I'd wait for Coon to put something down in writing before running with my previous comment.

The part about getting the DPOY is interesting and makes me think that the Spurs had their own say in this rule. Or maybe that's something Draymond pushed for.

The article you cite doesn't mention All Star. It only mentions All NBA. Are you sure All Star appearances, be they starter or otherwise, are one of the conditions that would merit this exception?

Either way, good days to be Kawhi. Bad for OKC as Westbrook doesn't get clear until his 10th season, cutting their advantage on resigning him.

I'm sure with enough advanced analytics or stats one could try to make Anderson look impressive

I don't understand why Pop pulled him for the last play. I saw balls, toughness, no fear on that shot he just missed. He's the type of player you want taking shots in crunch time. I can't believe Pop didn't give him a second chance at it.

He's a rookie. Pop will live and die by his vets, TOSB or otherwise.

I third this, thought he needed to be in the game. I'd almost be willing to bet he doesnt miss that shot twice.

Maybe he should have been there, but he had some awful turnovers in the third and maybe Pop didn't think he was ready for the moment.

And yet Bertans had a shot for the winner in the final 30 seconds

If Pop suddenly pull the plug on Bertans like he did with Simmons last year ..

Davis deserves more minutes..he has a pretty established niche and he looks to be confident dude...I would argue he is even more ready to contribute than Splitter was 2011.

I love Bertans but he ain't gonna displace dedman or Lee. That's just it. That duo is playing good.

Bertans would be a goddamn fool to re sign with us and spend his best years playing 25 minutes a game and resting on nights against lottery teams. And by the time his signing comes up, Parker and Ginobli will probably still be playing turning the ball over and going hero..
