I don’t give two s about what people on this forum think about me despite the fact I’ve been here for a long time. This hurts. Pop has been a figure, controversial or not, in many of our lives. It’s truly sad. To anyone who’s lost someone close or unexpectedly these things are really difficult (I lost my dad / best frend to cancer). It’s brutal. And I have as much empathy for someone I’ve never met as I’ve ever had.
    Sorry to hear that, man.

Absolutely, cancer sucks. Many of us have been there, in Pop's shoes in some way. This hits home hard. I've criticized Pop a lot, called him out. Honestly what the do I know though about coaching on a professional level. I'm willing to bet the majority of us are armchair GMs/coaches and have nowhere near the expertise of a battle-hardened Yoda like Pop.

To think that he coached throughout the past three years with this hanging over his head while his wife received rounds of chemo/radiation treatment, probably suffering debilitating side-effects of it, is something that is admirable on it's own level. If oncologists told Erin and Pop of a prognosis leading to an anticipated unfavorable time-range coinciding with the recent weeks/days, I cannot imagine how rough it has been these last few weeks...knowing the inevitable to come.

You probably won't read this Pop, but thank you for coaching and leading this team.

It could explain why he was drunk the other night on TMZ. Woj reported she was ill for a period of time.
Didn't someone here this season mention that they/we never sees Pop's wife? And also, I think that person thought due to the way Pop's not given a about coaching as much the past couple of years, he was wondering if there was something wrong with Pop's wife, if she had been sick. If she's been sick for a long time, then like that poster said, that might explain why Pop doesn't care about Basketball that much anymore.

I'm very sorry to hear this. As much as I've bagged Pop the past couple of years, I'm so sorry to hear this Pop.

Source on reddit claims she had cancer for the past 3 years ... fwiw
If this is correct, the person who wondered if Pop's wife was sick and speculated that Pop's change in coaching and outlook on life the past couple of years might be due to that, seems like he/she may have been correct. That sucks, as I never really took it seriously or thought something like that could be a reason for it. I should have given credence to that possibility.

Edit: I was also on page 1 when I first made this first post. Why are some of you guys joking around about this?

Same. I couldn't help crying even though I didn't know her, but I respect and admire Pop so much as a man, I feel like he is part of my life. I know it's weird.

I'm deeply saddened. Have had tears tonight and I've never met her. Pop has been an amazing blessing to the city of San Antonio, not just on the court, but off as well. Erin was his rock, huge supporter of the SA food bank. Man...I'm at a loss for words.

I really hope the city comes together and gives Pop a lot of love these last 2 games in the AT&T.

A fan's mind is very complex. As fans we unconditionally love a team, players, coaches for many years...More years than our own relationships.

We want them to stay healthy, happy...We really worry about their injures, illnesses, fam...We're sad when they're sad.

Love, loyalty, empathy...IDK. I'm just sad tonight.

ing heartbreaking, tbh..I've had my girl in my life for only a quarter of the time Pop had with his wife and I couldn't imagine the pain of losing her..after 40 years is just cruel, there's something unnatural about a wife going before her husband..

Also puts things in perspective, of course..I've been very vocal about Pop's lack of care for basketball the past few years, but if it's true that his wife has been battling cancer all that time, it makes all the sense in the world to give less s about a meaningless game..

    Its a news reporter.

She was suspended by espn for a few weeks because she tried fighting racism. ESPN thought it was out of place. Maybe ESPN was right. But i resepct people that fight for a good and unselfish cause.

For some reason, and I can't explain why, this has saddened me more than any other (natural) passing of people I've never met. I feel awful for our GOAT coach.
AMEN MY BROTHER. TOOK THE WORDS RIGHT OUT OF MY MOUTH.

This isn't a funeral; it's a message board. Gregg has my condolences though.

Sadly, Mrs Popovich had been sick since the mid-90s, though much worse in the last handful of years.

Very sorry to hear. RIP Erin Popovich.

If for some reason Pop shows up tomorrow I'll be respectfully standing up when he comes onto the court.

    Completely wishful thinking...

but can you imagine if Kawhi announced he would be coming back and suiting up for game 3 out of respect for Pop. Yes he’s been as ass for leaving, but if he truly did it for Pop, the emotional lift it would give Pop, the Spurs, the whole damn city, and would maybe help mend fences.

He wouldn’t even have to play good. It would just be for support and spiritual lift.

In hindsight, this tweet from March 2016 about Pop missing two games due to "family medical reasons" was already a foreshadowing of what was to come. I remember even back then there were already rumors going around of Pop's wife undergoing chemotherapy.
