Abortions happened all the time during the Bible's time frame. You'd think at one point if it was this big of a deal that Moses, Jesus or Paul would mention it.... but they don't.

More or less true. The Catholic opposition to abortion is well-grounded in its traditional teaching.
Evangelical opposition to abortion is because the Religious Right needed a wedge issue that wasn’t overtly racial back in the 1970’s. The issue was sort of a deal with the Catholic Church whereby in return for evangelical churches emphasizing opposition to abortion, the a Catholics would look the other way at white-only evangelical private schools and instead maintain solidarity as they lobbied to maintain tax-exempt status for religious schools.
