WASHINGTON (AP) - Former Texas Rep. Martin Frost dropped out of the race for Democratic national chairman on Tuesday, winnowing the field to front-runner Howard Dean and three challengers.
Frost's decision came hours after AFL-CIO leaders decided not to make an endorsement in the race for Democratic National Committee chairman.
Frost had counted heavily on organized labor to give him a boost and many in the AFL-CIO were prepared to back him at one point, but Frost had not shown the strength in the race to get an endorsement, union officials said.
The former congressman said he called Dean and ``congratulated him for running a strong campaign.''

I like Dean, but I'm not naive enough to think that he will be able to appeal to moderates. There is a lot of purple on the political map. The Democratic party will only succeed if they can turn the purple areas blue.
We need someone like Dean or Boxer that will fight hard for core democratic values, but we also need someone that can appeal to moderates. I believe that it is possible and necessary to do both.

I'm glad Frost is dropping out. He was republican lite. Dean isn't as liberal as he is made out to be. That is right wing noise machine spin.
Well, I for one don't agree with Barbara Boxer on some issue or Dean for that matter.
The democratic party needs to get back to the party of old or it is going to lose many old party democrats, which many have already done so.
Anyone who suggests that George Bush is wrong about something is cast as a liberal by the Rove machine and its component parts like Hannity and Limbaugh.
At what point did the word "liberal" become a bad word in America?
then you are naive...Dean does appeal to moderates, but the right wing spin machine spews otherwise, which sometimes is all it takes to make an impression regardless of facts or truthI like Dean, but I'm not naive enough to think that he will be able to appeal to moderates.
this guy gets it!Dean isn't as liberal as he is made out to be. That is right wing noise machine spin.
i may be wrong, but i think the whole "linguistic revolution" of the GOP mainly started to gain heavy momentum with newt gingrich and all the rules about how to speak and frame debates came aboutAt what point did the word "liberal" become a bad word in America?
You are wrong. It started when the GOP got tired of the Democrats framing their debates with lies about "killing old people" and "doing away with Medicare" and things like that.
The Democratic Party is now reaping what they sowed.
The beginning was the Reagan administration did away with the Fairness Doctrine. That opened the door for the 24/7 drumbeat that is on AM radio now without anyone to refute or present and alternate opinion.
You mean like Dan Rather, Peter Jennings, Tom Brokaw and Wolf Blitzer?![]()
well, at least things will be interesting now
Will be status quo it seems to me. I'm with Chalupa. The democrats to go more to the center than Dean can take them. Just my opinion.
Dean does have that kind of political rock star aura still from his early prez run success, but he is just too gaffe prone. If he wasn't so gaffe prone, and in some instances, unstable, I'd be be generally concerned.
Dean leads the DNC?
We get Christmas twice this year!!!
Looks like the Unions are going with Dean. Yes!

dean as dnc chair is desirable for democrats if they believe that winning elections is about base turnout.
looking at the results of the last election that might not be a viable strategy, unless you view it as the result of the nation being on a war footing and that absent that advantage for the in bent the results would have been markedly different.
Big Difference. Kerry tried to play the pro-war card during the Presidential run and look where it got him, and now Hillary is trying to same thing. Dean has always been anti-Iraq-war. The Democrats must stay with their core principles and quit appearing so wishy-washy.looking at the results of the last election that might not be a viable strategy, unless you view it as the result of the nation being on a war footing and that absent that advantage for the in bent the results would have been markedly different.
if kerry didnt he would have lost worse. bush already had kerry painted as the vietnam soldier hippie who was a traitor and what not else.
Trouble is, Kerry changed in stance on the war later on making him appear to be more of a flip-flopper than he really was.if kerry didnt he would have lost worse. bush already had kerry painted as the vietnam soldier hippie who was a traitor and what not else.
well there you go. had he stayed with the pro war stance maybe he wouldve done a little better
I really don't think the "flip flopping" stuff mattered to anyone who wasn't already opposed to Kerry.
At best, it was a Right Wing Radio buzzword that escalated into something that kept Kerry on the defensive... preventing him from effectively pushing any semblance of an agenda.
