What brand? How old?
The part on the computer where you plug in the power cord to somehow broke. It's hard to explain but the bottom part of the socket got broken off so when you plug in the adapter, nothing happens. The power cord itself also is damaged.
What to do? If I take it to a computer repair shop, will they be able to replace the socket?
Or am I screwed and should just toss it?

What brand? How old?
Sony Vaio. Year and a half old.
Never had any trouble with the computer itself.
I think it's my fault. I'm assuming that the battery adapter was still plugged into the computer and I jammed the whole thing into my laptop bag, snapping off the socket.
I don't know for a fact that's how it happened, but it's the only thing I can deduce.
that sucks. ive had a power cord for one of my laptops get worn near the end of it to the point it didnt work (cost nothing thanks to manf warranty) and a cord for another which basically burnt out and will cost about $70 to replace.
dont give up on the laptop though. cant beat being able to take a and surf.
I would think that a computer repair place can fix the socket and then we can just get a new cord, etc. But I'm not sure that it's that simple.
Check eBay for the AC power adapter cord. It's Sony, so you'll pay through the nose if you go retail. Hopefully, the socket is modular, and not part of the motherboard.
yeah, if the socket is part of the board, then you're looking at a new board. I would actually take it somewhere to get it fixed, but I don't know of any good Sony places to get it fixed.
Man, "Mr. Notebook" up here flat out refuses to even look at Vaios -- the owner chased out a guy that had a simple bad stick of RAM that was easily fixed just because of the name. If it's the board, you're probably going to have to send it somewhere. It might be cheaper just to replace. Good luck.
What VAIO model number is it? I was just on eBay, and there is a guy who will swap out the MB for some models. He was charging like $400.
It's PCG-9L1L
Are you sure the socket is part of the motherboard? Maybe (hopefully) they can just fix the socket.
I don't know, Kori, just doing some research in case.![]()
This sounds like a job for SparePartsWarehouse
I don't want to sell it. It's nearly brand new.
Okay, it's going to cost $276 for Sony to fix, but I have to ship it off. So it won't be ready in time before we go out of town.
So ... next question.
Is there a place that I can rent a laptop for a week or so? We need to be able to work while we are out of town.
I've looked into that before....I'm not sure if any of the computer shops around town do it, but as a last resort you can try like Aaron Rents ... those little stores that rent, rent to own furniture & appliances. Most carry laptops/computers.
Kori call my friend mark 287-0465
he will have it running in 24 hours and it will cost 160-180 depending on the model #
he might rent you another laptop for now. make sure you have the model number ready
and tell him what you need the Laptop for so he knows if you need a high dollar one or not..he has one that cost 3,000 and he does not like lending it out unless you have good credit.
hurry he has 9 others to work on and he is willing to put you at the front of the line,,,offer him some Spur tickets
