I still have vivid recollections of hearing about that happening -- George Brett was among my favorite players when I was a kid -- and thinking how stupid that decision was and how petty Billy Martin was to go there. For whatever reason, that whole thing always harkens back to the 1980 ALCS, when Brett hit an absolute bomb off of Goose Gossage in Game 3 and swept the Yankees out. Of course, Brett and his Royals had something of a long and contentious history with those Yankees, including a brawl between Brett and Graig Nettles at 3rd base of the deciding game of the ALCS in 1977, too.

It's amazing how heated things can be when rosters stay virutally intact for a long period of time.

    So true...

NY and KC met in the ALCS three straight years...'76 '77 and '78 and won everyone. I can still see Chris Chambliss circling the bases knocking people down trying to touch homeplate after his walk off home run in '76.

KC eventually did win a pennant against NY in 1980.

Everyone knows about the Yankees lineup back then, but the Royals had a uva team during that time period as well. Frank White, Amos Otis, Hal McRae, Brett, Darrell Porter, Freddie Patek...
