San Antonio Spurs assistant coach P.J. Carlesimo and Nuggets legend Alex English will lead the Rookie squad and Miami Heat assistant coach Bob McAdoo and Denver coaching legend Doug Moe will lead the Sop re team in the got milk? Rookie Challenge, to be played on Friday, February 18 at Pepsi Center in Denver, CO.
The head coaches for the Rookie and Sop re teams are the lead assistant coaches from the 2005 NBA All-Star Game coaching staffs, which are chosen based on the best winning percentage in each conference through games played February 6. The Spurs (38-10, .792) secured the best winning percentage in the Western Conference and the Heat (34-14, .708) clinched the best winning percentage in the Eastern Conference.
The got milk? Rookie Challenge presents this year's top rookies against the league's best second-year players. This year's game features Orlando Magic forward Dwight Howard, the first overall selection in the 2004 NBA Draft and Cleveland Cavaliers guard LeBron James, the first overall selection in the 2003 NBA Draft and 2003-04 NBA got milk? Rookie of the Year.
Carlesimo, who will be coaching the Rookies, brings 25 years of head coaching experience to the San Antonio Spurs, where he is in his third season as assistant coach. Before head coaching stints with the Golden State Warriors and the Portland Trail Blazers, he spent 12 seasons and made six NCAA tournament appearances as head coach at Seton Hall University.
English, an eight-time NBA All-Star for the Denver Nuggets and the franchise's all-time top scorer, was selected as assistant coach of the Rookie team. During his 10 full seasons with the Nuggets, he won a scoring le, averaged more than 23 points nine years in a row and led the Nuggets to nine consecutive postseason appearances.
McAdoo, in his tenth season as an assistant coach with the Miami Heat, will be coaching the Sop re squad. The former NBA MVP, five-time NBA All-Star and Hall-of-Famer obtained three consecutive scoring les (1973-74 through 1975-76) during his 14-year NBA career, making him one of only six players to accomplish that feat.
Assisting McAdoo coaching the Sop res is the winningest coach in Denver Nuggets history, Doug Moe. Moe is currently in his third season as a Nuggets assistant coach and coaching consultant. From 1980-90, Moe compiled a 432-357 (.548) record and led the Nuggets to the postseason nine straight years.
This is the sixth year under the current rookie versus sop re format with the Sop res leading the series 3-2. The game will be played in two 20-minute halves, with each team allowed one full timeout and one 20-second timeout per half. Individual foul totals will be kept, but a player can not foul out. A team will be in the penalty situation after 10 team fouls or after the second foul in the final two minutes of each half. In the event of a tie game, there will be a two-minute overtime to determine the winner.
