Brandon Webb said Tuesday, the day Haren’s new deal was announced, that he had agreed to terms and the length of a $54 million contract extension before the sides broke off talks in mid-June.

“We had agreed to terms. We were right there. Things didn’t pan out,” Webb said. “I heard on the radio today that people didn’t think I wanted to be a Diamondback. I’m not a greedy one. I’m not the one that pulled it off the table. We just couldn’t see eye to eye on a couple of things. I love Arizona. This is my first choice.”

“We did make progress working towards an agreement on Brandon Webb,” D-backs general manager Josh Byrnes. “Negotiating in-season is always delicate, and we could not resolve enough issues to justify continuing the process in-season.”

Webb is to make $5.5 million in 2009, and the D-Backs have an option that is worth $9.5 million and growing for 2010.

Webb already has earned an extra $1 million on his 2010 option by finishing in the top five in NL Cy Young Award voting in both 2006 and 2007, and he could add another $500,000 to the option if he finishes in the top five this season. At 16-4 with a 2.90 ERA, Webb appears to be the favorite at this point.

Haren received a partial no-trade clause through 2012, perhaps a sticking point in the Webb negotiations.http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_yl...pe=team_report

They will finalize it in the offseason. I have a feeling Webb asked for a no-trade clause and the ownership balked, at least for a full-out no-trade clause. He probably wants some production increases in his pay for finishing top-2 in Cy Young voting.

Little things that take a while lobbing back and forth that ultimately won't keep the extension from getting done, just from getting done now.

I don't care one way or another. Pena CANNOT be the closer. Rauch will most likely assume the role. Lyon as a type-A free agent is worth more to the money-conscious Dbacks than Lyon as the closer is.

Basically Rauch is ninth, Qualls 8th and Pena 7th...

Hopefully Owings gets back on track and Scherzer lives up to billing. I wouldn't mind the Diamondbacks shopping Davis for bullpen help, then resigning RJ for an extra year.

    Webb, Haren, Johnson, Scherzer, Owings

That's solid. Throw in Pe for spot starts behind the latter two.

Cruz is type-A as well, so D-backs net for top-50 picks for Lyon and Cruz, and likely two more for Hudson in addition to their own 1st. Diamondbacks should have seven of the top-40/50 picks next draft and can draft some potential as well as some immediate help.

cruz is ok if his mechanics are on

ownings is the one I am most dissapointed in

I liked pena but lately he has sucked

    the last 3 outings
pena ALWAYS gives up a hit

Rauch was traded for so lyon would know if he got to greedy d-backs could go to him
