With the Spurs boasting the best record in the league, Tim Duncan was out schmoozing with a free agent. While that seems harmless on the surface, you have to wonder what his teammates think. If Tim Duncan's schmooze is successful, one of the players on the team is out of a job (Linton Johnson III, Romain Sato, Mike Wilks?). Rasho Nesterovic, Robert Horry, Malik Rose, Tony Massenburg and Sean Marks will get their minutes cut ... if they remain on the team. That's over half the team directly effected by Duncan's date with Karl Malone.

Don't you think if you are a player on the team and Duncan is out there courting other players, that it would be a slap in the face? What kind of statement is it that the franchise player has such little faith in the team that he is out there trying to get an old man on one leg to come and play major minutes.

And what if Malone decides to hang it up for good? Is all forgotten or does Duncan lose some respect in the lockerroom?

    I'm just axin'.

Serious questions, Princess. That would be like you going out on dates with other guys and being like, "well if it doesn't work out I'll be back later."

That's not exactly the same thing.

Duncan is doing what he thinks is in the best interest of the team. And NBA basketball is a business. The Spurs are banged up in the front court and Duncan knows in the playoffs that he would like as much help as he can get upfront. The Spurs are solid in the backcourt and some insurance upfront (even in the form of a 40-something Malone coming off injury) is something that the team would like.

To me it seems like Tim Duncan is scared to be a vocal leader, but he has no problem back stabbing half the team.

    Nice.

Pop has been pretty up front about the team wanting Malone...and an article said they wanted Duncan to meet Malone to get Duncan's opinion on the impact Malone would have on team chemistry....

This is a little bit different from the blatant backstabbing that was done to Tony Parker...I think the team was pretty up front about this. Horry has already said he knew the team wanted Malone...Malik is used to being in the doghouse. The only guy I see having a problem with this is Massenburg. Mass didn't like being put on the IR with the Kings last season...

Of course...Malone is going to be a problem if he sucks, gurantee it. If he gets benched when he thinks he didn't need to be benched, I gurantee you he is going to go off in the media about being disrepected.

^^ Great point, keep TD happy, keep Manu and Parker happy to a second degree.

Of course you attempt to keep the rest of the team all good as well, but Mass is a guy that can probably be droppped without to much goin a stray.

He is not a big time contributer and only plays sparingly.

Marks - Very close with Tim it would seem not the kind of guy you want to cut if you wanna keep your star close.

Rose - To much history with the organisation to give up on.

Wilks - that third stringer that pop loves to have.

LJIII - the long three waiting in the wings that the coaching staff was ridiculously high on during the off season.

Sato - Is in his first year, and has too much "potential" to drop.

Horry - Are you kidding me? We aren't getting rid of Horry, too much expreience and smarts. He is one of the best vet minimum players around.

I dunno that pretty much everyone and everyone except mass has a reason not to get left off the roster. He is also the only one with a questionable character, he has been passed around like no other before him and has been labeled as locker room cancer in the past.

Unfortunately Mass seems to be the obvious subtraction should Malonne decide to end the drama and have another year in the league.

Oh wait thats half a year in the league.

I hate trying to predict what Pop will do...but my guess is that Malik will be the guy who goes to the IR and Marks will be the guy that gets cut.

I think it will be Malik because he probably has the game that is the most similar to Malone's...and Malik can really suck if he's not getting consistent minutes.

I just hope we don't run into Shaq in the post season...because then we will find out the hard way that Malone's reputation for toughness and physicality is a myth...

If he's so hard how come he got his ass bounced by the Mavs and Kings?

He basically made a living playing with one of the greatest PG's in history and whupping up on less talented teams.

How come Shawn Bradly laid him the out in the 01 playoffs? And Malone wanted no part of Bradley after that happened.

That he shut Duncan down on his own last season, is also a myth. Duncan was dropping 30 PPG on Malone until they started doubling Kobe on to him and having Shaq help.

Malone seldom picks on anyone his own size unless he knows they are a nice guy and he can get away with it(Like Duncan and Drob). Most of his thuggery has been aimed at guards...he won't be tough with Shaq at all IMO.

LOL, here and there...I am on call 24 hours a day 7 days a week. I don't necessarily have to do something every day, but I always have to be ready to do something, so I really don't have a routine. I try and sleep and if the phone rings I don't and if it doesn't I do...regardless of time of day.

I do have a vacation coming up in March finally! I haven't had a day off or a vacation in 2 freaking years.

I consider this a good omen...the last time I had a vacation(during the legendary 9-1 road trip) the Spurs won the NBA le!

Whottt getting a vacation = championships.

Pretty much. But it's got certain perks, it's real close to being self employed and working almost totally from home, and 90% of the time I don't have to deal with a boss breathing down my neck. I love that part of it.

Well, Timvp, as much as I love Duncan's game, I think it would be homerly to argue that he has ever been much of a leader. That aside, Pop is still his boss, and he's the one who is really behind this whole deal. Not to mention that players such as Wilks, Sato, Marks, and LJIII knew they were hanging on be a thread when they signed the contract. The Spurs have never had a problem cutting people loose.

    "no-brainer"

I'm sorry, but at this point, I trust the Spurs organization to decide what product they want to put on the floor. After all, they're the ones getting paid millions a year to figure these things out, they're the ones that have helped produce 2 championship rings, and they are largely due credit for our success this season.

That being said, if a current player decides to get his feelings hurt because the Spurs are pursuing a "no-brainer" free-agent like Karl Malone, then TFB. Same goes for fans too, at this point. This is basketball; not high school.

The NBA is a business. If a coach would get to choose between a 80% Karl Malone or a Mike Wilks, I'm fairly sure that 100% of them would take Karl Malone. It's not about Duncan courting Malone, but the team trying to get better.

If I was the 12th man off the bench for a NBA team and that team was trying to get a player like Malone and that team would cut me, I wouldn't be unhappy. Sure the player that will be cut will be sad to leave, but if a team can get Malone, there's no question. Sign Malone, cut a bench warmer.

Timvp, aren't you kind of backstabbing Kori by asking the forum for advice? After all she has the knowledge. Why not ask her and be happy with that answer? Don't you trust her?

Rasho comes back, Sean Marks goes on the IL.

    Malone comes in.

Sato gets waved and Mike Wilks goes on the IL.

That's more likely what is going to happen.
