You know I have to admit, I had wanted to visited Southern Cali for quite some time. Well me and a few friends finally did that this week. I went to a Dodgers game (Mondays game vs the Phillies watching Manny kickass) then went to the Angels/Mariners game (K-Rod blew a save and then got ejected as the M's won 10-7 in extra innings) then went to the Galaxy/Chivas game (ended in a 2-2 tie but man the atmosphere was amazing).

I visited Warner Brothers studio for a vip tour, Universal Studios, Santa Monica beach/Pier and the 3rd St Promenade, Sunset Strip,Rodeo Drive, the Staples Center and downtown LA and areas around it. I really enjoyed Cali and I plan on coming back next summer. I was going to make a trip to San Diego but I didnt have enough time.

All in all, this was such a fun trip and a wonderful experience.

If you do go there next summer, there's plenty of new stuff to see. Definitely make the drive up the Angeles Crest Highway to Mount Wilson... it's a pretty spectacular, and starts in Pasadena. Also, Santa Monica is a dump when it comes to the beach. The water is really nasty there. The best beach in the LA area is Huntington Beach south of town, although Redondo Beach is pretty sweet too with the views of Rancho Palos Verdes to the south. Redondo Beach also has a pretty big fish market with incredible oysters.

Another can't miss beach is Zuma Beach in Malibu. A lot of times when you see a So-Cal beach in a commercial or on a tv show, it's Zuma Beach.

    Zuma Beach

If you're into movies, there's a place north of town called Vazquez Rocks which is a fun (and very easy) place to hike around in if you can stand the heat. You'll immediately recognize it from movies, tv, music videos, and so on once you see it (Planet of the Apes and De La Soul's video for Breakadan are the two examples I can think of right off hand). It will be extremely hot in the summer though.

The desert scenes are at Vazquez Rocks... not sure where the ocean shots are taken

Another really cool thing to do in the LA area is to go up the Palm Springs Aerial Tram. It's either the longest or second longest tram up a mountain in the world, and it takes you up to about 8,500 feet in like 10 minutes. If you want to get to the top of the mountain it's on, it's about an 8-mile hike or so with 2500 feet of elevation gain from there (and totally worth it), but even from the top tram station you can see out to Vegas, Mt. San Gorgonio (the tallest mountain in So-Cal... unfortunately, that one is in an area of extreme air pollution, so it doesn't offer the same views on an average day), and the Salton Sea. The top of the tram is usually about 40 degrees cooler than the desert floor in the summer.

Here's a pic of the mountain... if you go after May, the snow will usually be gone though

Joshua Tree National Park is pretty cool if you like climbing on rocks or just enjoying spectacular desert scenery. It's also out in the Palm Springs area (about 90 miles east of LA).

The touristy stuff is ok, but I think you missed the best parts of the LA area. However, one awesome touristy place that it looks like you missed is Six Flags Magic Mountain; lots of great roller coasters, and X and Tatsu are the two best thrill rides I've ever been on.

2 hours? No way it takes that long. The traffic's not bad going north in the morning or south in the evening (if you go the other way, then you're ed though).

The Bay Area >>>>>>>>>> The Los Angeles area, but LA is still fun. I have a ton of family out there and love it down there.

Zuma's awesome for the views, and there's a part of it that gets pretty large waves. Sadly, the water is very polluted there. UCLA did a study on So-Cal beaches two years ago, and found the beaches in Malibu to be the most polluted in the area, with Bolsa Chica and Huntington as the cleanest.
