Austin, TX (September 12, 2008) – The San Antonio Spurs today announced the hiring of Wendell Alexis as the Austin Toros new assistant coach. Alexis replaces Roy Rogers who recently joined the New Jersey Nets staff.

Alexis comes to the Toros from an assistant coaching position with the New Jersey Ins ute of Technology (NJIT). Alexis was the team’s interim head coach last season, after Head Coach Jim Casciano had to leave the team.

Alexis played overseas for 20 seasons. He won multiple league Most Valuable Player awards including an MVP in the first division of the Italian league in 1993, MVP in the championship tournament for the Israeli league team Maccabi Tel Aviv in 93-94 and three MVP awards while playing for ALBA Berlin of the German Bundesliga from1996-2002.

After a very successful professional career, Alexis has spent the last four seasons coaching. Prior to his three year stay with NJIT, Coach Alexis was an assistant at St. Joseph High School in Metuchen, NJ and head coach of the MSU Skyliners 16 and under AAU team.

The Toros open the season Friday, November 28th against the Utah Flash at the Austin Convention Center. For season and group ticket information, call the office at (512)236-8333 or visit austintoros.com.

Hmm...a coaching mind, decorated past accomplishments, and I'm assuming about 40. What position can he play? Sounds like a call-up to me.

Toros are calling all of the Spurs season ticket holders in the Austin area and are inviting us out to the official announcement/press conference (I guess) Monday afternoon... been thinking about going - free food is free food after all.
