When will they learn.......who you THINK is #1 at the end isnt really the national champ anymore. You play the game on the field. Any team can beat any other team on any given day.
Bring on a playoff system for the true national champ.........win or go home.

You can find a true best team out of the top 16 teams IMHO. In 4wks after the final regular season game, you can have a true champ. college football takes a month off before the bowls anyhow.
If some think 16 is too many...........have 8 teams then, with a 3wk format......a dead week before the final 2 play. Its too ridiculously easy to even debate.
If people are worried about bowl money....still keep the other meaniningless bowls.....you could even use some of the bowls for the playoff system.....with the national championship game rotating between the bigges 4 bowls each year.
