Spurs Notebook: Another setback for Stoudamire
    Mike Monroe

Just when things were beginning to look up for Spurs guard Salim Stoudamire, he was back on the sidelines Tuesday after aggravating the right groin strain that has sidelined him for all but a few days of the preseason.

Stoudamire, who is trying to earn a spot on the regular-season roster, played his first game Saturday, scoring eight points in 21 minutes. The veteran of three NBA seasons with the Atlanta Hawks strained the muscle on the first day of training camp.

The Spurs still have 19 players on their preseason roster, and must waive at least four before the regular season begins on Oct. 29. Thirteen Spurs have guaranteed contracts.

Hill on the mend: One day after confirming that he has no ligament damage or broken bones in his sprained left thumb, rookie point guard George Hill was back on the practice court for limited activity with his teammates.

Hill was fitted for a new splint, and is adjusting to playing with the splint limiting his feel of the ball.

The rookie is not expected to play in tonight's game at AT&T Center against the Washington Wizards, but may be able to suit up for the preseason finale Friday against the Miami Heat.

Flying dogs: The mats were back on the court and the lights dimmed at the Spurs' practice facility after a Monday practice session as the players engaged in their second yoga class of the preseason.

As the players learn some new deep stretching techniques, some continue to struggle with unusual postures the yoga instructors are attempting to teach.

“The flying dog, or whatever that's called?” said swingman Roger Mason, Jr. “No, I'm not good at it.”

Mason, though, is a proponent of the yoga sessions.

“I think it's good for us,” he said, “good for camaraderie. I don't think any of us will be going home and doing yoga today, so it's good to do it as a team.”

At no level of his basketball career has Mason engaged in team yoga sessions.

“Never,” he said, “and it's a bunch of things. First day of training camp, Coach Pop said go out to the pool and let's get some exercise in the pool. I'm like, ‘Pool? As a team?'

“I think it's great. That's what championship teams do. They do things as a team. The team concept is what rules. That's why they've got all those banners.”

He should have wrote it like this:

Stoudemire is starting to look a lot like Speedy Claxton, i.e. chronically injured. Too bad, cause he has a lot of potential.

On the plus side, Mason is looking like a better and better pick up every day, and a couple of our rookies look like they might have promise.
