Jeff McDonald: Home, sweet home for Udoka ... and his mom
PORTLAND, Ore. -- Ime Udoka was all smiles at the Spurs' shootaround this morning, and why not?
He was back in Portland, where he was born and raised. He had secured 20 tickets (and counting) for friends and family who wanted to see tonight's game against the Trail Blazers at the Rose Garden.
And he had just given his mother, Agnes, the most pleasant shock of her life.
A night earlier, instead of taking his mother out to dinner, Udoka surprised her with a new house.
"I told her I had to drop some stuff off at a friend's house on the way to dinner," Udoka said.
When the pair pulled up to the "friend's" house in the Portland suburbs, several of Agnes Udoka's friends and family were already there. That's when her son uttered two surprising words: "Welcome home."
The ruse had been in the planning stages for months. Udoka purchased the property over the offseason, and his older sister Mfon spent the time since having it furnished and refurbished.
It is sure that Agnes Udoka smiled brightly when presented with her new home. But it would be hard to beat the smile on her son's face as he recounted the story Friday morning.
"This is something I've been wanting to do for a while," Udoka said. "It was 10 times better than buying your own house."
That's nice. Very nice! Kudos to Udoka!![]()

Great story. Now it's time for him to work on his next contract with the Spurs.
+1
Don't forget though, he can probably kill you pretty handily.
This is an awesome story. Good to hear how the Spurs are making lives that much happier.
Big ups to Ime!![]()
Unlike Brent who's always stay this season, trade the next, I think Ime will stay with the Spurs till ends his career.
Speaking of Udoka, he's been amazing on the boards so far this season. Including preseason and the first game of the regular season, he's averaging 5.2 boards in 18.3 minutes per game. That's a good amount of rebounds for a center ... much less a small forward.
That'd be very helpful if he could keep that up.
Very nice. Hope he can earn more minutes from non-mommy's boy Bruce.![]()
Wow. This is the kind of story we need to hear more often about pro athletes. Just another reason of the culture and kind of people the Spurs Organization is made of.
Big kudos to Udoka. I hope to do that for my mom someday.
he didn't have to beat up an angry mob, too.
